While there are many deserving players, especially those in the Negro Leagues, the player I choose is Don Mattingly.
Mattingly seems to be on the cusp of the HOF every year, yet every year he ends up short. Among his best attributes was his consistency; considered to be one of the top 3 hitters in the 80's and 90's, overshadowed only by Boggs and Gwynn, Mattingly's glove also outperformed both of them. A career .307 hitter with over 2100 hits, Mattingly also displayed exceptional abilities in the field, amassing 9 Gold Gloves over his 13 year career, and had a .996 fielding percentage. Topping off hsi resume filled with consistent excellence, Mattingly was awarded baseball's MVP award in 1985, and twice won The Sporting News' Player of the Year Award (1985-86).
