I do the following several times per day:
Sit flat footed with your back straight.
Turn your head as far as you can to the right and then do the same to the left. Keep your eyes straightforward. Feel the stretch on the opposite side of your neck. So this ten times. Don't rush.
Nod your head so that your chin tucks to your chest/throat area and then tilt your head back as far as you can. Do this ten times. Don't rush.
Rotate your head in a counterclockwise circle using your neck as a swivel. Try to touch your ear to each shoulder, your neck to your back and your chin to your chest. Don't rush. Concentrate on the stretch. Do this five times and then reverse the direction.
If you read or stare at a computer screen for hours and hours. These motions will help a lot for tension in the neck.
