I think Sidney Crosby is the best player in the world, but this logic is flawed. All it likely means is that GMs didn't realize Toews was still developing while Erik Johnson was already as good as he was going to get, and Jordan Staal had his value inflated thanks to his surname. It would be like arguing in favour of Brian Lawton over Steve Yzerman, because there was never any doubt that Lawton was going to be the top pick that year.
For the record, I'm sure the Pens regret that pick.
