I would think that of all the major sports, baseball is by a wide margin the hardest to predict stardom for. Even if you lowered the standard to league average player at his position, it would still be the hardest to predict. I figure he'll be somewhere between average and a little above average and maybe have 2-3 seasons of Vernon Wells numbers without the defense.

Also, its not just limited to the big name first round draft picks with unreal numbers who become established ball players. Chien-Ming Wang was a 9th round draft pick who was basically unknown before being called-up in 2005. In only three years he has two 19 game win seasons with almost twice as many wins as losses. Brandon Webb, another no-namer (249th overall pick) who went 6-10 in his first pro season at Single A. Ever since being called up in 2003 he's a 3-time All Star and a CY Young Award winner with a good chance of becoming this years NL CY Young. Russell Martin and Ian Kinsler...both 17th round draft picks with not so excellent numbers in the minors. Both are now All-Stars and excellent contributors to their teams.

I think that Matt LaPorta will have some struggles in his first MLB season but will eventually become a good ballplayer with a few All-Star appearances with some stand out seasons. But my opinion is just as useless as anybody else's. There are too many variables.
