Default 2008 Topps Sterling

Just wondering what everyone's opinion is on this product based on what we know so far. Do you like that it is all retired players? Will they guarantee any players in a 10 box case like last year with Mantle and Bonds? I like the checklist but I am not sure to buy a 10 box case or just boxes of the players I really want. Does the pricing go down at all before release? Seems reasonable right now?

The thing I worry about is that the boxes that have auto's will be of the newly retired players (also still alive) and go for less. If half your case has Gywns, Sanbergs and Gibsons it is going to be hard to break even with triple memorbilia auto's of those players with boxes at $250. You can be certain since half thier player list is deceased you will not be lucky enough to get a cut auto of those guys. I think the better boxes along the lines with Triple Threads, will be the non-auto'd boxes so you get a older CMG players memorbilia. I think this product is risky and while I plan to get two boxes I don't have any high expectations of hitting it big.

Jacobbigshow or TheKramers would best to advise here.

I have no doubt that these guys, (especially TK) broke a tons of this last year, but I think that this is a different product overall. No stated odds have been released on the sell sheet stating auto odds per case, but this we can probably presume will stay the same. I guess what I was trying to say is that the following boxes whether they have a triple memrobilia ($60-$80) or a triple memorbilia auto ($60-$120) are not going to make you happy when you pull their box:

Gibson
Mattingly
Murray
Brett
Palmer
Bench
Ryan
Yount
Sanberg
Munson
Seaver
Gywn

Yeah but if you sell the box unopened most of the players you listed have pretty good followings and people will scoop them up. Especially Ryan, Sandberg, Gwynn and Mattingly. If you open the boxes your resale potential decreases heavily. But people will pay a premium for the chance to get a jumbo swatch auto or bat barrel.

That's kind of my dilemma. I guess this is the risk reward with the product. Last year a 10 box case guaranteed a mantle and a bonds which good or bad at least you knew what two of the boxes would be. Would be interesting if they had odds on how many cmg guys per 10 box case. I might just buy a mattingly and munson box and get a 5 box case to gamble with

Who dare mention our names jk
Ok I am very excited about this years sterling.....a lot of people are bashing it, but I do not see any problems. Sure there will be a lot of "junk" but is that junk really junk? As long as we still get 1 huge hit per 5 box case (like a Mantle or Clemente or Willaims or Joe D or Babe Ruth.........o god I can contiue naming names with that checklist) then this product will be great. This is the best checklist of all time, can you imagine how much the Ruth boxes will go for! If you ask me, Ruth is the selling point of the case. Is it 1 per 3 cases, 5 cases, 10 cases???? If it is between 3-5 cases man will these cases be good....the Ruth boxes will probably sell for $1-5K. Remember if you pull "junk" it is still a $500 card, 1/1 its a $1,000+ card. 8 peices.....and what about an auto! BAT BARREL!!!!!!! We are talking about a $50,000 card perhaps....the Mantle that TK sold for was sold for over 10K. This will be the best set ever....om but I am not hyping it up at all

AND ND3 you said it....they boxes will sell sealed easily on the second market....when I pull a Sandberg or Scmidt the boxes sell so fast...the only boxes that have problems are Gwynn and Yastremski......

nice points jacob. I think the key here is definately the odds of hitting the ruth box and some of the other key guys. If you are guaranteed a cmg guy per 10 box case then I think I'll definately get a case. It will more than make up for the lesser players boxes in the case. Besides you have better chances at a nicer card in the lesser players boxes right?

like others have said a lot of the so-called "junk" are guys who haven't been in sterling yet which should really help those player boxes sell. i know i'm hoping to pick up a bunch of yount/molitor boxes on the cheap (in addition to the cases i already have on order)

So you guys would open all the boxes, sell or open mystery packs separate then sell off any player boxes you don't want? I guess I'm biting the bullett on a 10 box case. Is this price range too high (Currently 2419.99)?
