Default Kevin Gregg to Cubs

ESPN - Sources: Florida Marlins trade reliever Kevin Gregg to Chicago Cubs

I thought the Marlins usually destroyed their teams after they won the World Series....Guess the economy is taking its toll on its first franchise.

This is an interesting move, its like they are telling Kerry Wood its been real but time for you to go, unless Gregg becomes their set up man.

straight salary move.. He will not surpass Wood as the closer unless Wood becomes the Wood of old and can't stay healthy...

You could see this coming during the regular season when the 'Fish started using that other kid as closer some.

I think the Gregg trade is insurance if they can not sign Wood for what they want to spend on him. This allows the Cubs not to over spend on Wood if some other team expresses interest in signing Kerry. If Wood is not with the Cubs in 2009, I bet they'll move Marmol into the closer role and have Gregg as the set-up man and emergency closer if Marmol can't handle the closer role.

I don't know why I'm suprised, the Marlins looked like a team on the rise last year.

He doesn't ever become the closer in Chicago.

If Wood stays, Gregg replaces Bob Howry as the 7th inning guy.

If Wood leaves, Marmol becomes closer and Gregg becomes the set-up guy.

Either way, you won't see Gregg saving any games for the Cubs.

ESPN is reporting wood will no longer be with the cubs

ESPN - Cubs: Kerry Wood won't be back after trade for Kevin Gregg

I dont believe I am saying this as a Brewer fan but it would be very nice to see Kerry Wood in a Brewer UNi for the next 2 -3 years. to replace Torres and Gagne-

I am really confused by all I am hearing the last couple days about Kerry. I am a HUGE Cub fan and have been my whole life. I think that Woody has been great for the organization and is a class act. With all the said I am not as high on him as most. He is still a very solid pitcher but was in no way lights out as a closer. He still has a bad habit of walking guys and the long ball can be a problem. I can remember quite a few Dempster/Burowski like saves coming from Woody last year in which the leadoff batter would get walked and then a double off the wall etc....
I am looking forward to the Marmol closer era and am more worried about How-the hell can you blow that many games-ry pitching at all in a Cubs uni.
Just my opinion

From what I understand, Hendry (the Cubs GM) didn't want to give Woody anything more than a 1-year deal. Given his injury history, I'd agree. Either way, I think Marmol was in line to be the closer for '09. Either Gregg or Samardzija will be the set-up man, unless the Cubs move Samardzija to the rotation. If Woody finds the market isn't willing to give him 3 years, things may change, though.

Howry needs to go... fast. He's just horrible and the Wrigley faithful have banished him to the LaTroy Hawkins/Todd Hundley category, where he gets booed if he's anywhere near the field.

I agree with Howry he needs to be gone asap.

Im not so sure about the trade

Gregg seems to be about the exact same as Wood. Plus they lose one of their
better pitching prospects in Ceda. Plus Kerry had the whole history thing going for him with the 20K game and everything else, always tough to lose someone like that.

I also was under the impression Marmol or Samarzidja would be the closer in the near future.

It will be interesting to see what other trades they are involved in and how everything settles before opening day

Oh, boy... I found out we traded Ceda just after I posted this morning. From everything I've heard, Ceda is a Lee Smith-type that isn't far from major league-ready. I hope this doesn't come back to haunt us.
