Report: Michael Eisner may be shopping Topps

A “Heard on the Street” item published by the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday suggests that Michael Eisner may be looking to sell Topps, the longest-running manufacturer of baseball cards.

“We overhear the former Walt Disney chief may be looking to sell Topps. The firm is famous for its baseball and football trading cards, not to mention Bazooka Joe bubble gum and Ring Pops. Mr. Eisner teamed with Madison Dearborn Partners to buy Topps in 2007 for about $385 million.

“No word on what Topps could fetch now. The company denies it is on the market. But it likely would draw some interest.”

Topps is the exclusive official licensee for Major League Baseball, Minor League Baseball, USA Baseball, WWE and Ultimate Fighting Championship trading cards while also holding licenses for the NFL and other non-sport properties.

Not surprising. Eisner isn't in this business to lose money, took a few years to see the direction the industry is heading and doesn't like what he sees. Better to sell now while Topps still holds the MLB exclusive. Panini will have one before long.

Yeah, its obvious that Topps , despite what they claim, is running their business like a heartless monopoly. You can't blame businesses for making money but it is shortsighted just to pay strict attention to the bottom line if you are losing customers year after year.
Topps CEO is a Stanford grad and the latest Stanford alumni mag had an article about how the Topps CEO is 'so passionate' about his business, etc. The poor customer service and weak checklists are byproducts of bad management starting from the top, and is evidence contrary to that 'passion'.

I doubt Topps is worth or would sell for as much as it did a few years ago.

Michael Eisner has done nothing of quality in any business he's been involved in. He may have made some money, but that doesn't mean he did anything good
