What do you think the Frank Thomas Holy Grail Card is?

I have been looking around, and there are a bunch of great cards of his, but I wonder if the No Name on the Front Frank Thomas is the Holy Grail of Thomas cards or is there another I am missing?

Why that one? I know the story behind it, but curious to hear your take. I always see 1/1's of his selling for higher than that NNOF and that's why I wondered if it really is the one a Thomas collector would be looking for.

1/1 cards are nice and all, but in the abstract they are simply a base auto or card of the player with fancy glitter on it. Manufactured chase rarity specifically designed to induce one to purchase lots of product.

The 1990 Topps card, however, is an unintentional chase card in a very crappy and widely-available product. You can't weigh out packs or boxes to find it. You can't use a metal detector to find it. And it isn't a sticker auto that is 1/10,00 sticker autos that found a home on a fancy glossy card.

The above is why i would take the Frank over any 1/1 for my personal PC. To sell, sure, if this is fantasy land give me the higher selling card. But for my PC, i'd value a pack-pulled 1990 Topps NNOF more than any 1/1.

I'm sure thomas has some sort of bat barrel book. That would be my "holy grail".

I wanted this baby, but the price was just a little steep:

I am thinking of going after one, but the thing is the faked ones look damn real too. No too long ago a guy had a Beckett authenticated one, and had a link to the beckett site as proof of it's authenticity. It got me thinking about the card.

Well I paid in the $250 range for each of my 3 1/1 auto triple patches (topps sterling). I couldn't bring myself to pay over $600 for the barrel, but I definitely regret it now in hindsight.

Maybe they will have some sick 2011 TTT Thomas card you can pick up. I'm definitely a fan of crazy mem pieces (barrels,knobs, nameplates, logos)

I used to collect The Big Hurt back when he was doing well in the 90s... I agree that the barrels, knobs etc... are nice but I wouldn't pay that much for them.

However, I still have all that Thomas stuff in a storage locker somewhere

Maybe they will have some sick 2011 TTT Thomas card you can pick up. I'm definitely a fan of crazy mem pieces (barrels,knobs, nameplates, logos)

haha I know what you mean about time. I have been swamped lately as well, but work is slow so I have time while im here.

I hope they do make a sick Thomas Piece this year. They almost did with the Frank Thomas piece in Goodwin, but they messed it up big time with the wrong Frank Thomas sig.

Highcheese I am always buying or trading if I have funds. I have been a bit low funds wise lately but am putting some funds together for over 8 or so lists that I still have to make deals on. If you don't want'em im your guy buddy.

For me its because during a time of mass produced cards at least something unique came out of all the garbage. And the fact that its his RC makes it the best one out there IMO.

I always thought it was the 1990 Topps NNOF even though some autos sell hgiher if they are 1/1

The rookie sensation was nice back in the day as well. Has no monetary value anymore but that could have very easily been it. Reason it wasnt was because fleer left those little holes in the cello packs and you could see the blue border. I hit the THomas and Bagwell at the liquor store same day no searching. That was the first "high end" set I tried to finish.

I don't think that's true, but I coundn't say for sure. When the press was printing the jam happened and there were only a few hundred printed. Now whether or not they all went to one area is something I would love to know.

Not sure about the regional aspect but I thought they were in rack packs only....and as for the number i would probably guess its closer to 1000 or more but still to me it is the Frank Thomas card to have. You would have to find a graded one because of counterfeits etc....I have seen a PSA 10 before (probably 7 years ago one was at the LCS if I recall). But to me this is his card to have.

Some other sports card forum where they found it was a strip of missing black ink across several cards. Somewhere in the thread they mentioned that it only came out of the states on the east coast.
