Good thread - when you look at the options, it really is a difficult call.

You see someone like Verlander this year and think maybe if the pitching dominance continues..

400/56 are just too hard to make a prediction

bonds - lmao

Cubs - born, raised, and live in chicago and until the end of the '08 season a fan - I just don't know if that franchise will ever win

So my choice - NONE

He did hit .394 in 1994, which never happened. The strike year screwed everything up, so saying that he would have been close I think is shortsighted at best. He had no REAL pressure of it coming down to the wire, so he was just hitting out of this world in the middle of summer. Brett was the last one to get close with playing in a real season. It will not happen. The best hitter of our generation has not even come within 28 points of it. Again, none of those will be broken.

100 stolen bases is something that I don't believe will be reached either, but as the long ball proves harder and harder to get, the stolen base could come back a bit. It could happen, but very doubtful.

""He did hit .394 in 1994, which never happened.""

-Yes it did. Your refusal to acknowledge reality is disturbing.

lobo_hacker, who thinks Cy Young's career win record is likely the most difficult one not yet mentioned in this thread

This is fact. I didn't even think about that one. 300 wins might not even happen again, possible but not likely. 400 wins will never happen and 500, frakin forget about it, Cy Youngs record is by far the most cemented record in all of baseball, second to Nolan's strikeout record and I believe third to Ripken's iron man record. These three will absolutely beyond a shadow of a doubt ever even be gotten close to again.

You left the Hitting Triple Crown off of that list. I think Curtis Granderson has a shot at that AND the 40/40 club in the same season (not this season obviously).

That's a toughie. Unless there's some major rule/style change in the game. I don't see a .400 hitter or 30 game winner any time soon. A 56 game hitting streak would be due to an incredibly rare anomoly...plus players choke when people start tracking their streaks. I suppose it would be Bonds, which would open up a crap-shoot of other players getting in. Sadly Bonds had HOF stuff w/o the roids .

I went with the Cubs winning the World Series. If Back to the Future taught us anything is that it will happen. Just like 80's nostalgia cafes, flying cars, hover boards and time travel (all in that order).

Second i would go with Bonds because the other events are so hard with the way the game is played now.

According to the film the Cubs win the World Series in 2015. Only problem is they have it against a fictional "Miami" team.

Of course the Marlins were not a team when the film was made.

Close enough for me! Well who knows, maybe the Marlins will move and change their name to the Miami Marlins.....and the stands will still be empty.

Or you could be close enough (geographically) and have it happen against the Rays.

the only way they could win the world series is to beat an AL team. it would have to be tampa bay. but i love the cubbies, just sucks that they suck. need better management.

I had no idea.

We were just making reference to the BTTF film in which that ficticious "Miami" team was mentioned.

Yes, obviously it did happen, but if you want to say that he would have been close at the end, then you have to acknowledge that Matt Williams might have broken Maris' record and the Expos might still be the Expos. I just cannot see .400 happening. The reason Cy Young's record is not on there is because it is a different type of record. Something that no one will come close to, and never has been able to. .400 at one time was not easy to get, but people did it, just as 30 games wins was not out of reach. The 56 is just stupid crazy.

If you want to continue to say that Gwynn was the closest, fine, but I say it was Brett, because he had the pressure down to the end. Gywnn just stopped where he was. It is not a big deal either way, just a difference of opinion.

I don't get your guy's argument. Tony Gwynn did hit .394 in 1994 which is in fact the closest to .400 anyone has gotten. Thats not fiction that is factual numbers.
