Default EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK: Topps prepares 2012 Gold Rush wrapper redemption program

EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK: Topps prepares 2012 Gold Rush wrapper redemption program

December 7, 2011 at 2:42 PM

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

Next year’s Topps baseball card set will be all about gold, and the company unveiled another aspect of its flagship product line’s hued focus exclusively to Beckett Media on Wednesday.

It’s the 2012 Topps Gold Rush.

While there will be actual gold found in dem der packs, there also will be Gold Rush cards next year as part of a wrapper redemption program done in conjunction with the MLBPA. It goes along with the online Golden Giveaway, which requires code cards found inside packs and, of course, can found along with cards that contain real gold.

“These images do not do the card justice,” said Topps Director of Sports Brands Clay Luraschi. “These will be full-coverage gold-foil stamped.”

The Gold Rush cards will be just one part of the Gold Rush promotion. Randomly inserted into Series 1 packs will be Magic Gold Rush tickets, which will unlock a “gold-infused autographed baseball” — each signed by Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Ken Griffey Jr.

The Gold Rush cards will be found in a wrapper redemption program. While more details are still to come, the five-card packs will have autographed versions of the cards randomly inserted into them. The Gold Rush set itself will consist of 50 cards.

As part of the promotional push, Topps will provide participating HTA card shops with promotional kits and “unique tools to create excitement and support the launch” as long as the shops sign up for the program by Friday by requesting information via email at goldrush@topps.com.

Topps knows what us collectors want:

Cards With resale value

On-Card Autos

Not Angel Pagan

Some type of Quality control

Redemption accountability

honesty and integrity

Full-Coverage gold-foil stamped shiny things!

Yet again, I have to ask, is this just gonna be hobby wrappers, or are HTA jumbo wrappers gonna be included in this also...

A gold auto baseball signed by Jr, Aaron or Mays may be pretty cool. Other than that, nothing is really all that interesting.

I do hate sticker autos though.....

Maybe they can stamp "Winner" on some of the cards.

For some reason when I read this I keep thinking about the old early 90's Topps cards where you got a gold card per pack, 1991 or so. And we can't forget the Black Gold redemptions

What's the over/under that Topps uses sticker autos on the balls?

Wow...copy a stupid idea direct from Panini. You see how well the "Gold Standard" product line has worked for them. Could you get any lazier (this goes to all the card companies)? Collector's don't want gold or diamonds or any sort of precious metals/shiny stone....THEY WANT A BETTER DESIGNED/EXECUTED PRODUCT. STOP BLOWING YOUR BUDGET ON THESE GIMMICKS AND PUT AN EFFORT INTO WHAT REALLY MATTERS TO THE COLLECTORS.

/end mini-rant.

Fellas, at least they are offering us a chance at an auto baseball. That is a step in the right direction.

Just 5,279 more and they will be on the right track.

I think your memory is failing you. They sent regular gold packs then they realized people cheated so they stamped *Winner* on all the cards they packed out. Black Gold first appeared in 1993.

I was 14 years old and wish I had a I knew about Mag Lites, I used a dark closet and a normal flashlight. Won almost every time but wasn't that easy.
