Default Are Byron Buxton and Carlos Correa hurting 2012 Bowman Draft?

I know they are 17 and 18 Years Old, but the #1 and #2 Overall Picks in the draft should at least look like real baseball players, as in hit at least halfways as well as Nick Punto; neither one of them is sniffing half of Punto's numbers right now.

Carlos Correa Stats, Bio, Photos, Highlights | MiLB.com Stats | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball

The last two years, there have been Bubba Starling and Manny Machado AUTO's with their base AUTO reaching the $80 mark and Gold Refractors in the $500-$600 range. At the time of the 2012 Draft, you could imagine both of these guys being in the $60-$80 range, but as of right now, I just can't see either one of them selling for that, I would say more like $35-$50 tops at this point.

We'll see if Mark Appel, Kevin Gausman, or Lucas Giolito end up signing in the next day or two, but right now, 2012 Bowman Draft is not looking so appetizing.

14 games seems a little premature to judge them as busts.

To the casual prospector, sure it probably doesn't make it look as good as it should be. It will hurt those people who bust draft just because there isn't anything else to bust at the shop, and just know names.

Everyone knew coming in, that the 2012 draft couldn't hold a candle to the 2011 draft. I will say this however, and a lot of it depends on the auto checklist, there are some guys I will be throwing money at because they were better players in my opinion that either of the guys you just mentioned. One guy was a late 1st round and the other a 1st Rd supplemental.

AZL stats are as meaningless as AFL stats.

These look fairly impressive:

Team League AVG G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG OPS
ATH AZL .450 12 40 15 18 1 2 1 8 26 13 6 6 1 .593 .650 1.243

The A's must have seen something to pick up Russell at 11.

So is who actual signs with teams how Topps determines who they put autos of in Draft? I'm wondering if Kevin Plawecki has a chance of being in there. It looks like he's signed, but not sure if he'd have enough of a following for them to add his auto in a product yet.

Almora will be the #1 auto in draft is what my gut tells me. He (like Starling) already had a pretty good hobby presence prior to the draft. He also has a large Cubs fan base that will be after his autos. Correa and Buxton will be fine, and who knows when their auto will be released (saved until 2013 bowman maybe?) but I think Almora will have a great following.

I think it is way too small of a sample size for these guys.

Let's look at Mike Trout's MLB numbers...

2011 - AVG .220 HR 5 RBI 16 SB 4 AB 123
2012 - AVG .341 HR 12 RBI 40 SB 26 AB 258

Although this is comparing MLB stats to GCL stats, the point remains that things change. Especially with a 17 and 18 year old.

Besides that fact I didn't expect Bowman Draft to include either of these guys anyways. I'm betting they'll be saved for 2013 Bowman. What is hurting draft is that Gausman and Appel are leaning against signing with the Orioles and Pirates respectively. And then who knows about Giolito.

I'm not saying that Buxton and Correa are complete busts and I'm giving up on them as becoming MLB stars one day, but their stats are terrible right now, and there's no way they can save face and have even mediocre stats this season. I just feel like they are dropping from $60 base, $500 Gold Refractors to maybe $35 base, $300 Gold Refractor AUTO's, and I feel like that will hurt the product. If Addison Russell keeps up his ludicrous numbers, maybe he can somehow take their place as a $50 base, $400 Gold AUTO guy, but as of right now I don't see a Manny Machado or Bubba Starling type guy in the 2012 Draft Class.

Look at some of the 2011 Bowman Chrome Draft guys like Javier Baez, Danial Vogelbach, or Blake Snell who were considered lower tier AUTO's from that set, they are putting Buxton and Correa to shame. I would much rather buy more 2011 Bowman Draft than 2012.

Draft is definitely unappealing and lackluster this year. It is a product I will avoid for the first time in about 4 years of prospecting. I'm usually in for a case or 2 of draft every year. I will be getting BC instead this year. But this is going to be a good product to pick up as singles. Like the OP said, the main guys won't be carrying much of a premium, unless they are on fire come release date or something, though I highly doubt it. Some of these kids might be nice in a few years, but at release there will be bargain basement prices on color autos to take advantage of IMO.

perhaps draft will tank & then it'll become appealing as anything can look good depending on price point

There isn't even an auto checklist yet. Relax.
