phil, maddux, rainmanesq and anyone else...
I listed 10-count lots of all 165 chrome cards and am starting to get a bit nervous. With about 48 hours left, almost every lot doesn't even have a .99 bid. Is this normal? Or did all of you overestimate this product? I got in for $575 a case and opened five cases. Thanks Tim |

Part of the issue is that the market is so flooded right now it may not be the best time for your auctions to be ending. On Thursday and Friday I sold almost every Bowman Draft listing with a BIN as soon as it hit Ebay. Starting Saturday it was like the Ebay site was down may sales were so slow.
The big guys like Laporta and Price will get bids, but a lot of your auctions on the lesser guys will likely end unsold. |

I guess I don't understand how people couldn't have known that in advance -- the people who break this stuff every year. This really sucks. I never would have taken the labor and effort to open and sort five cases to have my a** handed to me like this. Should have just sold the cases unopened and broken even I guess.

The chrome lots are only part of where you make money. You still have the autos and refractors. Hopefully you got a few nice hits on those that will cover some of your shortfall on the lots. It only takes one nice Gold or Orange of the top picks to make up part of the case quickly.
I agree this is one of the most time consuming products to try and bust and sort..you have chrome...then base....that those stupid worthless thick gold cards. I spent all weekend and still can't finish sorting. Even more frustrating is knowing you are sorting lots or sets and it will end up going for $.99. |

"Duped" is a strong word. But absolutely there was misleading information when I remember "You can't go wrong listing in 10-count lots if you got in for x amount, etc." I make my own choices and I am going to take responsibility but c'mon -- you can't say that experts giving their opinion that turns out to be wrong is not at least faulty info. You sound like "the board" should automatically get a free pass when information is shared that is wrong.

The people who told you to sell in player lots were right. However, someone probably should have mentioned that listing all 165 players was probably not the best way to go about it (for me anyway). I think you'll find that many players, especially the "RCs" and futures game guys you can put in a big lot. A lot of those will not sell or will go for 99 cents in even 20 count lots. It's a lot of work to sort, list, pack, and ship lots when you're only getting a couple of bucks for them and having to relist some over and over again. Instead what I do is watch the guys who list first. I take the guys who didn't sell for them and put them in a lot. In the end, there probably isn't one perfect way to go about it. Also, you have two days left so I wouldn't sweat too much yet.

I understand why you're panicking. I think when you spend a lot, on say 5-10 cases, it is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I would wait until after those lots have ended to panic. Even if you got crushed on your parallels and autos, it shouldn't leave you down too much.

don't look at me. when i do player lots i use BIN or fixed price at the price i want and what doesn't sell goes in my store where most of it sells eventually. i never start anything at 99 cents unless i'm happy getting 99 cents for it

After sitting back for a week and watching the market this product is not going to do well short term. The interest just isn't there, and more importantly, neither is the money. If you want to make back your investment on this stuff you're going to have to wait it out and sit on most of this until the spring or mid-summer. Right now just isn't the time to move it. I think EEE is going to suffer a similiar fate, probably on a much grander scale. I just don't see any of this stuff taking off with this prospect class. You might get a few good hits and make a little back, but this isn't a rip and flip proposition. Too much product online, too little interest and too few buyers = poor sales. Anyways, good luck everyone.

I was just going to suggest ending all of your auctions and waiting until spring training or mid-summer. In the last month a lot of the auctions I was bidding on or just watching were ended suddenly. I hoipe that you can sell all of your sets. Last edited by iam4car3; 12-17-2007 at 11:29 PM. |

YES! I studied this 2 days wednesday and thursday...i can not see why people sell player lots, maybe in years past HOWEVER...
#1 it takes WAY more listing time, shipping time, email time, shipping materials/costs #2 you have a lot of leftovers that you can do nothing with or make sets with #3 sets are $50-$65...that's almost 33 cents a card, in lots there is no way! I added up 3 sellers lots, took averages, YUCK around 16-20 cents on average per card, and many unsold auctions or 99 cent ones #4 less listing fees and final value fees I SOLD as player lots...WHY? and why do you bdp sellers do it this way... Simply add it up... Is this always this way? The best seller is 20-ct Joba around $90-$100 and only for RC #18, so 20 sets are like $1100-$1250, so the other 164 players MUST average $6.10-$7.01 to get this... even mr mem only had 17 guys bring over $10 for lots of 20, ouch!

Tim - I know this is too late now but I don't remember seeing your original thread or I would have replied then. These are not the best rip and flip products because most of the "quick flip" value is in the low numbered refractors and some autos. Sure it helps to hit a big red, orange or gold refractor that pays for alot of boxes by itself but thats not always the case. Player lots ARE the best way to go if your selling on fleabay but usually there are only a handful of players that are getting decent money right out of the gate.
I've always found out that the BEST way to MAXIMIZE my investment with these types of products is to be patient. Remember, alot of the players in BDP start out in either rookie league or low A and won't get any love for a few years. Strike while the irons hot on the chrome rookies that are not autos (especially pitchers) Never dump RC autos of position players for $5. -$10. I usually give them a few years to develope before I write them off. Only ones that I sell right away are the pitchers I don't like (about 90% of them) or those destined for the bullpen. Rarely do I keep pitchers. For every Joba there are a dozen Gavin Floyds. I sell off all of the green borders, and about 95% of the golds and regular rookies right after my break. Luckily, I don't have to use fleabay to move those. I only keep the autos, certain refractors and regular chromes of the prospects I like or that I read about that have alot of potential.

I don't want to toot my own horn or anything, but I was the one who said this product is a big-time money maker in the long term, but that short-term it could be painful because of the lack of big-name autos.
The auto set is absolutely loaded with talent. You're looking at a checklist that could end up being unparalleled in terms of the number of big-dollar autos as far as a BDP set is concerned. This is going to be one of those sets where people look back and wonder why they didn't bust ten cases of it when they could get it for under $600 a case. It's just not a rip-and-flip product this year. Sterling's going to be rough too. GREAT checklist. But the buy-in is too high. EEE could be the set of the year, but it depends on the hobby's willingness to ignore the fact that the set isn't licensed. |

Because long term it is the best way to maximize profits. How many people were giving away 20 Ct. lots of Buchholz back in 05? Those who held made a nice little profit this year. It only takes a handful of players to more than make up for the ones who never materialize. I only sell maybe the top 25% of players now (with exceptions to the ones I believe will really break through) and hold all other players until there is a reason to sell. Right now is a time to be a buyer of this product not a seller.

I would have waited until the Chrome bulk lots had dried up on eBay first, before listing my own.
Didn't do very well with my 4 cases, collation-wise. Pulled 7-14 of each player. Naturally, most of the better guys were those I pulled less of.
