Default Ideas for a VINTAGE pc?

Hello all,
I am looking to start some sort of vintage collection but I do not really know where to start.
I was wondering if you had any ideas of what to collect or maybe just say what type of vintage collection you have
Right now my only pc is Jimmy Rollins, but he doesn't have too many nice cards for me to chase :/

The only things i can really add is that i really only like pre '70 and that i am not looking to spend a ton on each card.

Thank you in advance
Wyatt

p.s. I don't need people to say 'just pick a player' or 'just do your favorite team' i am maybe looking for something more abstract that some of you have done or heard people do.

EDIT: thank you for all of your responses, I have decided to take metsfan's idea

I am going to get the topps card of every cy young winner (and maybe start al or nl mvp eventually) from the year they won. I am just going to do 1975 and before because after that it is all really cheap cards and not really vintage.

This means

1975 Jim Palmer, Tom seaver
1974 Jim Hunter, Mike Marshall
1973 Jim Palmer, Tom seaver
1972 Gaylord Perry, Steve Carlton
1971 Vida Blue, Ferguson Jenkins
1970 Jim Perry, Bob Gibson
1969 Mike Cuellar, Denny McLain, Tom Seaver
1968 Denny McLain, Bob Gibson
1967 Jim Lonborg, Mike Mccormick
1966 Sandy Koufax
1965 Sandy Koufax
1964 Dean Chance
1963 Sandy Koufax
1962 Don Drysdale
1961 Whitey Ford
1960 Vernon Law
1959 Early Wynn
1958 Bob Turley
1957 Warren Spahn
1956 Don Newcombe

I've heard of people collecting the final Topps card for as many HOF players as they can get. It's a great idea, much cheaper than RC's, and cool to see the players in their final year. The only thing I don't like about this is you get players on teams that we usually don't associate them with. Mays with the Mets for example.

Try doing one, some, or all of the '60's subsets. i.e. All Stars, League Leaders, RC's, Record Breakers, Team Cards, Manager Cards.

I am building a vintage PC of HOF'er's with only graded copies. If I obtain a raw, I get it graded. Depending on cost of the card, I like to stay between PSA 4-6.

I'm doing 59 Topps and it's been surprisingly inexpensive. Even the both Mantle's havent' been too bad. Finding the high #'s in the condition I want has been the hardest part.

We're team collectors so it's been pretty fun to try to get as many Twins vintage cards as possible. It's also a good way to learn some history on your home team.

This isn't entirely vintage but I had started collecting one unopened pack or just wrapper if it is older and one card of a known player from each year. Until you get back to pre 75 the wrappers/packs aren't too bad and the cards can be whatever you are willing to spend. On all of the newer releases I picked the best rookie in the set. Figure they aren't very expensive until you get pre 1975. Before that I just picked a HOF player.
Never finished this project but it was fun while I was doing it.

What about picking an award(s) like cy young/MVP/Rookie of the Year/ ASG MVP/WSMVP. Then get the card from the year they won. It will be hard for pre 1950 but 50s-now is possible.

I am currently building a collection of a HOF player that consists of PSA 7s from every year he played. 17 total seasons, therefore 17 cards since I am only doing base cards. Of course the RC will cost me some serious coin, but it is doable in time. I currently have 3/17 and should have 4/17 by the end of the week.

Most 60's & 70's vintage can be had for pretty low prices if you're not too picky about condition.

You could also take a look at pre-war cards on a budget. I focused on prewar and t206's for a little while. t206 commons in fair-poor condition can be had for under $20. t206 hall of famers can be had for $20 - $50 in poor condition except for the top tier players (Cobb, Cy Young, Mathewson, Walter Johnson, etc...)

This was my vintage pc:

http://www.blowoutcards.com/forums/g...intage-pc.html

The only t206 that I paid over $100 for was the Christy Mathewson Pitching (Dark Cap Variation). Unfortunately I had to sell off the pre-war collection recently out of necessity, but I will definately be re-building that collection when I'm financially ready to start building my pc again. Warning...prewar cards can become addictive once you've gotten your hands on a couple! The beauty and history of those cards is unmatched.

Do some older 1950s early 60s smaller sets. For example I am doing the 1953 Bowman Color set PSA 5+. You could do the set ungraded to save money or do another set like 1961 fleer greats for example and get all kinds of big names that are still vintage. (Ruth cobb ect)

I've been collecting Vintage cards of now defunct teams such as the Washington Senators, Colt 45s, Brooklyn Dodgers, Kansas City Chiefs (I think I got that one right). Nice and inexpensive Vintage PC for the most part, and I'm a big fan of baseball lore. Might start collecting Piedmont and 206 minis if sales increase.

Depending on how old you are, start with the year you were born and work your way back collecting sets.

Yup, this is what I'm starting with in my re-connection to the hobby this year. I like the award winners idea as well. But would you want to year of the award, or the year after to see the stats?

What about being a "type" collector. You buy one card from every set. Easy for Topps and Bowman, but you could branch out into meat cards (Oscar Meyer), potato chip (Dan Dee Chips), topps inserts fro the 60s, etc. You could add to the challenge by getting them all in a specific grade, but they would look really sweet chronologically in a binder. Have fun and enjoy the world of vintage.

I exclusively collect T206s and T201s, while finishing a 55 and 59 topps set.

Well since you like Rollins maybe start a vintage shortstop collection. I thought about doing something similar in football with FB's or TE's. Underrated but there have been some very good ones.

Pick a year and do the whole team set for the year.

EX. 69' mets- Collect all the 69 Mets Cards

Big Red Machine

Gas House Gang

79' Pirates ( We Are Family)

Teams that had a good story to them and known for something.

I am trying to put together what I consider the Topps vintage sets. I do not consider anything over 25 years old vintage, (that would make me vintage for a while now!) I believe vintage is 1979 and earlier, prior to the ridiculous mass production of the 80s and 90s.

It has been a huge challenge, but more fun IMO.

I am the same as you, and do not have the insane amounts of money to buy the highend, so when I get a good pull, I just try to trade for the higher vintage cards I need seeing as a lot of people are more willing to trade higher value than pay a higher price.

Eventually I would be looking to get all 28 sets PSA graded, but that will be a task to have done by the time my kids go to college, (8 years to go).

The great thing about vintage is that their value hardly ever goes down. Look at what has happened to guys like Bauer on value...people paying well over a hundred for his color BC autos, he, like most pitchers, fail or get hurt, and people lost a LOT on him. Vintage this does not happen. Yes you pay a premium for them, yes they may be harder to come by in a good condition, but they keep value. When was the last time you heard a vintage Mantle going down significantly?

Either way I ranted a lot, but I think Vintage is the way to go, and I told you what I do, I would recommend for you to pick a easier year to put together (78 and 79 are real easy and have some nice cards in the set) and then keep moving on to a new set once that is together. Do not try and put them all together at once, I made that mistake and am paying for it now.
