Berken pitched a good game.

Good game or not, Cueto needed to put up that goose egg badly after his recent string of abysmal starts.

That said, I'm one of the folks who's more inclined to go with a starter for the Cy. And as long as Kimbrel is in contention, I don't know how you can overlook Medlen, who's ERA is practically as sick as Kimbrel's (1.51 vs. 1.10) but has thrown over twice as many innings.

Thoughts? AL version as well for those who are curious: Justin Verlander deserves the AL Cy Young award - ESPN
Wow. i'm a Kimbrel guy and i didn't even know some of his #s were that dominant, historically.

hell, i feel like he's in a slump cause he's given up hits the last 3 outings.

So who is "unofficially" in the running for Cy Young at this point? Here's my list of who I think actually has a chance:

Dickey (obvious)
Gonzalez (obvious)
Kershaw (obvious)
Kimbrel (best reliever stats)
Medlen (dark horse)

I left Lohse, Cueto, Hamels, and Cain off the list because some combination of Dickey/Gonzalez/Kershaw has better stats than all of those guys. I left Chapman off because (1) Kimbrel has better numbers, and (2) he's hurt, and under those circumstances I think there's only room for one reliever on the list.

Please don't misinterpret what I'm saying ... all those guys I left off the list will get votes (maybe even some 2nd/3rd place votes). But my list contains who I think actually has any chance to win.

Thoughts?
Kershaw is obvious ?? I don't think he should even be considered.

Oh please. You can't wrap up a 655-post thread just like that

I do, however, agree...as long as he doesn't throw any stinkers his last three outings.

I'd go with Kimbrel, then Medlen of course (bias).

In all seriousness, I think Kimbrel should get a very serious look.

He put two on in the 9th and turned it over to the bullpen before recording an out.

Win #20, 7 innings (being preserved for the playoffs, only threw 91 pitches), 1 BB, 0 ER, 5 K for Gio... Made a BIG push for that Cy Young today.

If it wasn't for a faulty bullpen, Dickey would have had 8 IP, 0 ER ... pretty sure Dickey pitched better today than Gio, so I am confused as to how you think Gio made a big push today? Just because of a stat idiots love called wins?! lmfao

I think it might have something to do with Swingman thinking Gio gave up 0 er,
when in fact, gio gave up 2 er. A good performance nonetheless.

Gio Gonzalez Stats, News, Pictures, Bio, Videos - Washington Nationals - ESPN

edit LOL the above is a complete blunder on my part - apologies

Dickey also gave up 2 er and after allowing the first 2 men on in the ninth and getting pulled.
He also had a single and darn near hit a grand slam

advantage Dickey

Gio gave up 2 runs, 0 of them were earned meaning he gave up 0 EARNED runs. Dickey on the other hand gave up 2 EARNED runs.

You can believe whatever you'd like. I am telling you what people in baseball who vote and make decisions are saying. I'm not giving a fan opinion.

My apologies, apparently ive had 1 too many beers.

you are correct about the er

as for the second part of your statement,
Gio has 1 more win but 2 more losses
Dickey has more strikeouts but gio has a better k/9
Dickey has a better winning % ,
almost 27 more innings pitched,
is ahead in era by 0.18
3 Shutouts to Gios 1, and
5 complete games to Gios 2
Whip? Dickey 1.04 Gio 1.12
Do you really think the voters ignore all of that stuff because of 1 win ?

and CY predictor has dickey in the lead.
http://espn.go.com/mlb/features/cyyoung

What happens the rest of they way ?
We'll see...
