I remember going to a show about 8 years ago and a guy had packs for $5. I bought one for the hell of it and pulled a Griffey! I had never just bought one pack to pull 1 card and actually gotten it.

I bought a box on eBay when I was first getting back into the hobby specifically for the Griffey Jr and didn't pull a single "Star Rookie" subset card much less a Griffey. Can you say "searched box"?

I bought a box not too long ago, pulled a Griffey which looked AMAZING. Sent it in to BGS, here's the result:

3 9.5's (Including centering). The holo on the back gave surface a 7.5

Transaction Number 13

I must admit that I know more about Griffey cards then anything else. In fact, I know them so well, that if you were to ask me who the top prospects for 2013 are, I couldn't tell you. But if you asked me my opinion on how much a 2008 Upper Deck Ultimate Quad Patch Auto of Ken Griffey Jr. would sell for, I'd be pretty spot on.

I eat, sleep, and breathe Ken Griffey Jr cards. I know them very well. It's basically all I collect. I could guess that a Nolan Ryan auto could fetch $50-60. Or a Chipper Jones Auto would sell around the same price. Maybe. Honestly, I'm not sure...

The point I'm trying to make is that I'm realizing that most of my transactions will be Griffey related. And that kind of bothers me. I wish I knew more about other cards. I wish I was more diversified in the hobby of card collecting. Although this transaction is another Griffey purchase, I vow that the next purchase will not be Griffey related. I will force myself to expand my horizons, learn something new, and make this journey worth while to the readers. So with that said, here is my awesome purchase I made today.

Every once in awhile I will do an ebay search with Griffey's incorrect last name. For instance, instead of typing "Griffey" in the search bar, I'll type "Griffy". Or maybe "Grifey". Yes, people really do list and sell on ebay with incorrect last names. It's a great trick to get a nice card at a cheap price. To prove it, here is transaction number 13. I owe all my thanks to "Griffy".

I bought this:

Here is the ebay link!

Transaction Number 13 Update

This is an update from transaction 13. I just received the cards in the mail from the ebay seller. They managed to package the cards incorrectly. As you can see in the pictures below, this is how it was shipped. Stapled between a piece of cardboard that was removed from the bottom of a soda can box. 3 of the 4 cards have staple holes through them when they packaged up the cards. I just contacted the seller to see what can be done. I had a buyer lined up already for the set. Here's a lesson folks; Don't count your chickens before they hatch. Updates to come.

We are currently holding our breath and waiting on the ebay seller with the following:

$.57 Cash
$66.35 Paypal

And the following Cards:

#1 1989 Ken Griffey Jr. Mothers Cookies Rookies. (factory sealed) damaged with staple holes
#2 1989 Ken Griffey Jr. Mothers Cookies Rookies. (factory sealed) damaged with staple holes
#3 1989 Ken Griffey Jr. Mothers Cookies Rookies. (factory sealed) damaged with staple holes
#4 1989 Ken Griffey Jr. Mothers Cookies Rookies. (factory sealed)

Yuck, sorry to hear! I recently did something similar - purchased a nice resale lot on Ebay of about 16 jersey cards, when I got them they were all sleeveless in top loaders without the tops pinched...and that was it for packaging. So a few fell out of their loaders and swam around the package with two getting creased pretty heavily. Luckily (not usually a lucky thing) the seller also used incorrectly sized loaders and jammed 10-12 of the cards into the loaders so those didn't fall out. But dang...is it really that hard to ship correctly?

So gross! I had someone ship some highend cards in top loaders with no sleeves but luckily the didn't get damaged. It's just amazing how some people ship cards!

Sometimes people who aren't in the hobby don't know how to ship cards. I bought an auto from someone who does estate cleanouts, they shipped it in a PWE without any protection at all.. no soft sleeve, no toploader, etc. Just the card in the PWE.. amazingly it arrived mint.

Transaction 13 Update

This is the final update for transaction 13. After contacting the buyer, he agreed to refund the entire purchase and let me keep the damaged Griffey Cards. Albeit I am happy to have a full refund, this transaction had a bright outlook on getting me one step closer to my goal.

__________________________________________________

After receiving a full refund of $5.49 from the eBay purchase, this is where we stand:

$.57 Cash
$ 71.84 Paypal

And the following Cards:

#1 1989 Ken Griffey Jr. Mothers Cookies Rookies. (factory sealed) damaged with staple holes
#2 1989 Ken Griffey Jr. Mothers Cookies Rookies. (factory sealed) damaged with staple holes
#3 1989 Ken Griffey Jr. Mothers Cookies Rookies. (factory sealed) damaged with staple holes
#4 1989 Ken Griffey Jr. Mothers Cookies Rookies. (factory sealed with staple hole in wrapper)
