Default What is a White Whale?

Is it a printing plate? Why are they so thick and how come they have patches? Sorry never seen one in person. Also are they case hits?

Yes they are printing plates. So there are 4 per item. I only own one.
I cant speak to why topps chooses to do what they do,
but as its a 1/1 they do tend to get the cooler patches when the players gu cards are jerseys.
However, sometimes they are just bat pieces

I think the correct answer is that they are a printing plate (1/1 really a 1/4) for Triple Threads only and they just were given that name. I don't think 'white whale' is used with any other high-end/thick stock Topps products use 'white whale' other than TTT but I may be mistaken.

I actually like printing plates unlike many others but I think the 'white whales' are horrendous looking cards.

Its kind of hilarious how many 1/1s and white whales are available from TTT- you'd think it would be a bit harder to find one considering its a reference to Moby Dick.

Anyway, a huge ebay pet peeve of mine is when people list any 1/1 as a white whale. I think there was a Dillon Maples superfractor that the guy listed as a "white whale". Ummm... no.

I don't really understand why Topps decided to name those plate-like cards "White Whales" since it's a reference to Moby Dick that hobbies like this use to denote a single item you're obsessive about acquiring. As nice and gratifying as plates and other 1/1s can be, I don't think most people have a specific Triple Threads card that's really their "White Whale." But that's just me. Anyway, I do have a couple Triple Threads White Whales as a point of reference:

So basically they attach the plate to a thick stock patch card? It isn't solid metal.
