Default Autographing baseballs.

When you get them signed, what have you found to be the best pen or sharpie etc to use?

I had a friend lend me a pen by sharpie last year that came out really nice and I have something coming up to get some balls signed but we cant remember what pen he used.

Suggestions?

staedtler permanent markers

The fine ones. I can't remember who on here had it - but someone had a Joe Montana signed baseball using these markers. The most gorgeous signature I've ever seen on a ball.

A plain Bic, ball point pen is the best. Cheapest and the best. Markers will look nice, but they will bleed.

About 98% of my 300 baseballs are in a Bic, ball point pen.

Most collectors will say a blue Bic ballpoint pen. Make sure you use blue and not black, over time black can turn redish brown or grey.

The staedtler lumocolor looks nice, but if your collection has other balls signed in ballpoint, the stadtler ones will stick out like a sore thumb. And if you ever go to sell the autographs, I think a lot more people would prefer blue ballpoint.

All of this is absolutely correct.

While they look good at first, over time most permanent markers bleed into the leather. As you can see by searching this forum in about a year the staedtler is starting to bleed. In some conditions it could take 5 years, some 1. These things are great for chrome cards, but awful for balls.

Best Pen to use for Autographs on Baseballs

Plain, old blue Bic over everything else...the Staedtlers will look nice, but they are a type of permanent marker and tend to bleed over time.

we don't know this for sure. There has not been an example of one bleeding but we have not seen many examples of a 'over time' one either.
