Default Prospecting Question:

I just don't understand, these are the last 2 copies of their respective cards that have sold:

2011 Bowman Chrome #BCAP-DB Dylan Bundy Baltimore Orioles RC Rookie Signed AUTO | eBay

2006 Bowman Chrome #DP84 Clayton Kershaw Dodgers RC Rookie Signed AUTO | eBay

The difference is less than $1. Why would you buy an auto of a prospect from a small market town, who is currently a middle reliever, and has a small chance at succeeding in the majors, rather than Kershaw. In case you live in a hole, Kershaw is the best pitcher in the NL, and only 24. He plays for a big market team, just had a another Cy Young caliber, and is regarded as one of the best "big game" pitchers in the MLB.

To BO:

Please don't judge all Dodger fans based on your interactions with and opinions of Thommy.

Oh and I forgot to mention no BS about me, I want an answer, not a bunch of complaints.

Because of the possibilities......

I am no prospector and will not pay exhorbitant prices for a guy whom I have no idea if he will even make it through his first year. Then again, I would love to have those prospect cards simply to sell for an enormous profit now and then buy them back once they become regulars or get something I really want.

Thommy, you do a very fine job of crashing other threads with nonsense, so it's only fair that others do the same to yours.

I'm with you on this, I don't understand prospecting. I guess I just like the star players of each sport more than I like a "supposed future star player"

Another word: Speculation.

Basically people are willing to pay prices much higher than rational market value for something; all the while banking on their belief that another buyer will soon come along and pay an even more irrational price.

It's a gamble, you just don't want to be the one holding the bag when reality sets in. Inevitably the price will correct and someone (or many) will lose.

I look at it like this... People invest money into players who have a pretty big shot at becoming MLB players. Dylan Bundy isn't just a "middle reliever", he's one of the O's top prospects. Just like Kershaw was for the Dodgers.

as dumb as the op is for calling bundy a "middle reliever" it is absolutely ridiculous that one of the top few pitchers in the game's bc auto is the same as some guy that if he reaches his absolute potential and doesn't get hurt would be lucky to get to kershaw status in real life

I hardly think anyone in the MLB (or MiLB) has as much potential as Kershaw, but alright

STOP trying to understand it.

STOP trying to rationalize it

STOP using common sense

STOP calling Bundy a Middle Reliever

It's the stock market and people are stupid. Others stupidity is my gain.

Excellent comment!

As other have stated, don't confuse collecting with speculating. Speculating is just betting that someone else thinks the card has a bigger upside than you do. It has little to do with the current skill level or accomplishments.

A few things:

1) I think you need to look up the definition of the word "potential".

2) Many threads have discussed this issue ad nauseam, with none coming to a definitive conclusion either way. As Major League stated above, it doesn't make sense, so there's really no reason to continue to beat a dead horse on prospecting and its peculiarities.

3) When attempting to make a point, especially when you state you don't want to be excoriated by BO members, don't make silly comments like "Bundy is a middle reliever" and "Kershaw has more potential than Jeebus himself". It's easier to be taken seriously when your comments aren't shortsighted and incorrect. You're a homer - I get it - but that shouldn't prevent you from looking at other issues from a non-Dodger standpoint.

Yay Dee Gordon...?
