If it's a combination of how visually dramatic it is AND the severity of it, I'd say Malarchuk and Theismann. But if we can count one where the actual suffered injuries turned out to not be that terrible, I'd have to add Geoff Bodine's crash in 2000 when they ran the trucks at Daytona for the first time. It was a Friday and I'd gotten home from school early because of an approaching snowstorm, so I turned on the truck race, and about three minutes later, the wreck happened. The announcers thought he was dead right then and there. He ended up only breaking an ankle and a cheekbone, I think.

I think it was like 2 or 300. Also if it were 1/8" deeper he would have been dead in minutes. Crazy video and crazy read.

Some people are posting about guys tearing ACLs or breaking an ankle AFTER its been posted that Malarchuk had his throat cut on TV. How else is it supposed to sink in that Malarchuks injury IS the worst injury in modern sports at the moment. I lived in Toronto but we always used to get the Sabres games on the fox station. Notice how the station never fully cut the feed. Clint Malarchuk throat slit by skate - YouTube Yes guys have had their necks broken but no one knows for sure when that happens. As soon as Malarchuk lifted his helmet the whole arena knew what they had seen and most viewers did as well!

I remember reading somewhere that a ton of people in the stands were throwing up and that the entire place smelled like vomit. Not sure how accurate that is but I am pretty sure I would as well. The crazy part is how it just looks like a normal hockey collision but 2 seconds later you know something is wrong as hell. The trainers saved that guys life. Also, every time I've watched hockey since, I imagine that the same thing is happening with almost every collision. It's bothersome.

The trainer, did indeed save malarchuck's life. He was a former army medic and actually reached into his throat to squeeze off the blood loss! Funny thing was I was about 11 or so when it happened and I went out and had my mother buy me a neck guard so that I would be somewhat protected when I played.

The guy who got his neck sliced open is the worst ever. But the worst one Ive ever actually seen live is Johnny knox last year, I thought he was Paralyzed without a doubt, His broken back is the best thing that could have come out of that, his head touched the back of his thigh.....

When I see the leg injuries, I'm in shock
When I see Malarchuk bleeding everywhere, I feel ill. That's why it's worse for me. Plus the whole "could have died" factor.

I've seen a lot of these sports injuries on tape but I remember watching WWE live back in college and Eddie Guerrero did a frogsplash and dislocated his elbow(s). Pretty gnarly looking... even though wrestling is fake, that injury was very real.

Tyler Colvin getting impaled by the bat in 2010. He was on a tear until he got impaled in the chest by a broken bat.
