He wants $100M which is going to equate to 6-8 years probably. Are we going to make another Soriano mistake?

Cubs To Sign Kyuji Fujikawa

By Zach Links [December 1 at 3:59pm CST]

3:59pm: Fujikawa will receive a $1MM signing bonus, $4MM in salary for 2013 and '14, plus a vesting option at $5.5MM or $6MM based on games finished, Rosenthal tweets. If the option does not vest, it turns to a $5.5MM club option with a $500K buyout (Twitter link). In total, Fujikawa has a guaranteed $9.5MM when including the buyout.

3:55pm: Fujikawa's deal is worth $9.2MM over two years, tweets Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.

3:41pm: The Cubs have reached agreement with Japanese closer Kyuji Fujikawa, sources tell Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). The deal will be for two years with a vesting option in year three, Rosenthal tweets. Fujikawa projects to be the Cubs' closer.

Yesterday it was reported that Fujikawa was nearing a decision with the Halos in the lead. At least ten teams offered the hurler along the way, including the Dodgers, Orioles, and Diamondbacks. Over the past six seasons with the Hanshin Tigers, the 32-year-old record 202 saves while posting a 1.36 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, 12.4 K/9, and 2.3 BB/9 in 369 2/3 innings.

How about another Kosuke mistake( For way less money, but still 4.6 MIL a year for a 32 year old on a team that wont compete for years? Blasphemy.)

Cubs To Shop Alfonso Soriano

By Zach Links [December 1 at 2:51pm CST]

The Cubs expect to meet with teams regarding Alfonso Soriano during the upcoming winter meetings in Nashville, major league sources tell Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Soriano holds a full no-trade clause and is owed a total of $36MM over the next two seasons.

The 36-year-old is still likely to garner strong interest from teams who need right-handed power and the Cubs are willing to include cash in the deal to make it work. Soriano may be more valuable than expected, when considering the two-year, $10MM contract free agent Jonny Gomes just received from the Red Sox. The Phillies would appear to be a strong fit for Soriano as they are still looking for a right-handed outfield bat to replace Hunter Pence, who was shipped to the Giants at the trade deadline.

Finally!!! Now we just have to deal with finding a team to trade him to and then getting him to waive that pesky no trade clause.

•The Cubs have non-tendered Ian Stewart, Jaye Chapman, and Zach Putnam according to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat (on Twitter).

I kinda liked Chapman. But I couldnt be happier to get rid of Stewart.

Fielder wanted a Pujols contract. Did he get that? No. No team will give him 100 mil.

A 3B and Another Starting Pitcher, maybe Stanton if he becomes avaliable, and as of right now, Bourn.

I would be extremely happy if we could pull off getting stanton or bourn. Both are the kind of ballplayers we need! Not going to be enough but would be a good start. With a young star like stanton the cubs honestly could start filling out their roster and actually look like an MLB ball club.

Our pitching will be rough again this next year though...

You need players and veterans, especially ones with talent. If Bay does well, you flip him for prospects. If he doesnt, its a 1 year deal at little money.

No risk or worry at all for something like that.

You hope a change of scenery turns Bay back into the hitter he was in Boston/Pittsburgh.

THEO: my take
He caught lightning in a bottle in Boston. He's way over rated as a top level GM
IMO

I have to disagree. He has been with the Cubs for 1 year, and I am already happy with the results. The farm system is MUCH MUCH better, the Cubs are younger and cheaper, and he is being smart with contracts and dishing out cash.

Everything is going to plan, the 4 year plan. Not the 1 year plan, or the 2 year plan, the 4 year plan.

He has never rebuilt a team before. He bought up free agents before in Boston, he didnt rebuild. Im not saying he wont become a great GM, I really hope he does obviously, but hes overrated as of right now IMO. I have no reason to consider him one of the best Gms like he is considered though.

Who are the large free agents that the Red Sox "bought" for their first world series?

Here are all of the players added from when Theo Took over at the end of 2002, and during 2003 before the first title. I think you might change your tune pretty quickly. Eventually, yes, the Red Sox got into massive spend mode, not the first few years when Theo was building up the organization.

Kevin MIllar - Claimed off waivers, Peanuts

David Ortiz - Peanuts

Curt Schilling - TRADE

Todd Walker - Trade

Jeremy Giambi - Peanuts

Mike Timlin - Peanuts

Ramiro Mendoza - Peanuts

Bronson Arroyo - Claimed off Waivers

Jeff Suppan / Brandon Lyon - Trade for Freddy Sanchez

NO big free agent transactions leading to the World Series Title.

Cubs To Sign Nate Schierholtz

By Tim Dierkes [December 5 at 8:29pm CST]

The Cubs agreed to a one-year deal with outfielder Nate Schierholtz, tweets ESPN's Jerry Crasnick. Schierholtz, 29 in February, was non-tendered by the Phillies last week. He's represented by Lapa/Leventhal.

Schierholtz hit .257/.321/.407 in 269 plate appearances for the Giants and Phillies this year, playing mostly right field. He could assume that position for the Cubs, as they could use David DeJesus in center field.

Thats the lightning in a bottle we talked about, he made some good moves and got lucky, and then eventually just bought up every FA on the market or traded prospects for them. I hope theo can turn the team around, dont get me wrong, but I think its going to take a lot longer than expected.

But the Nate Schierholtz signing might be a goodie.

8:48pm: Levine's report "grossly misrepresents" the nature of the Cubs-Dempster talks, tweets Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times. He says negotiations are not happening and a reunion is implausible.

Theo is a great drafter and evaluator of talent.....Anthony Rizzo, Papelbon, Justin Masterson, Dustin Pedroia, Ellsbury, everyone in the system now.

I dunno how Cubs fans can say hes overrated after 1 year on the job.
