Chipping isn't a big deal to me as it just seems to be part of the deal. But dings and creases are a problem. No reason for that Clark to be packed out with that corner.
Something else that bothers me more than chipping is when the athletes don't sign in the right space. You'd think they'd be able to convey instructions on where to sign. For example, the Koufax book they tweeted where he signed on both the patch and the card and the Pujols-Trout book where Pujols signed over his own photo rather than the lightened area for signatures. With how often these guys sign and how much these cards cost, you'd think problems like these wouldn't happen.

I thought each pack contains five hits...
- 1 Autograph (Active Player)! - 1 Autograph (Retired Player)! - 1 Autographed Relic! - 1 Autographed Book or Autograph! - 1 Jumbo Jersey Relic, Bat Plate, or Bat Knob! Is this not true??

I don't know why people are surprised - it's always the same with high end Topps stuff - boom, or total bust. Most people will get killed - a few will absolutely rake.

i know it's subjective, but does anyone else think the grainy design on these is terrible for such a high end product? i mean, cmon... will clark's unibrow never looked so pronounced! tier one designs were so much better IMO.

i emailed topps Customer Service for clarification on printing, packaging and pack-out process. i'll update if they get back to me.
i know for a fact that just because it says carlson printing co... minnesota or whatever does not mean the cards or packaging was printed there. nor does it guarantee the pack-out process is in the US.

If the cards listed on eBay are from on pack/box then we can already see some results:
Freddie Freeman #/10 sold for $175 Will Clark auto/bat sold for $75 Willie Mays base (?) sold for $37 Andre Ethier (not sold yet) Vida Blue (not sold yet) Total of $287 so far. Of course these are the first ones listed and prices will drop.

I was about to post, if the Freeman really sold for $175, I think that's very encouraging.

Clark says it was pulled early and not sold, Freeman says sold. Wasn't following the Mays base and completed listings are a mess so don't know about that one.

I'm not positive myself, but if you click the links in the first post in the thread it shows that they sold as BIN/BO. They don't show up in the completed listings though (yet).
EDIT: Just noticed the Clark was ended early. Sorry about that. I think the Mays and Freeman both sold though.

The Cup hockey is just as expensive as this stuff and has been produced for the last 7 years. Chipping was/is a big issue on many of the cards. It's just sort of accepted and people live with it. I suspect that most of the angst here over the chipping is because people who collect baseball often look to grade their cards so condition is heavily scrutinized moreso than hockey.
Personally chipping doesn't bother me really. I don't grade anything either so I suppose that's a big part of why. I have well over 100 Cup hockey cards and I'd be hard pressed to find 10 that didn't have a chip or some other end of the world flaw. And before the "well when a product cost xx amount you should get......" argument comes along remember that pro athletes don't look at a stack of cards and sign each one like they're gold. Bowman Chrome cards could bend around a tree so a guy who signs them and tosses them in a pile isn't doing them much harm. A thicker patch or jersey card does not have the same tolerance for handling. One thing that UD did do to cut down on some of it is to use more white borders and edges. The chips are still there but you have to look for them. I'm not in the preactice of looking at my cards with a loupe so there's that. |

Also, I think there's incidental chipping and then there's "this card looks like ass" chipping. I think there's a little too much of the latter in Five Star (going by football since we haven't seen much of the baseball yet).
