Default Aroldis Chapman Told To Prepare As Starter

"Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said Wednesday that the team has told Aroldis Chapman to prepare to be a starting pitcher.
The Reds actually told Chapman to prepare as a starter immediately following the season."

Looks like Chapman will be starting in 2013. It may be risky considering his success as a closer but it's also risky to not give him a shot as a starter with his potential. Reds signed Jonathan Broxton to 3 year $21 million dollar deal, will more than likely be closing for them.

He'll be on the DL at least two times this year.

I don't know if he can throw 200 innings a season...hopefully he doesn't blow out his arm mid season. Wasn't Chapman a starter when he started his career?

I think he'd be better off as strictly a closer. He won't be able to throw 106 the whole season as a starter.

Stupid move number 1 today in baseball. Broxton for 21M over 3 years is awful, and Chapman as a SP will probably not work. Even if it does work, he won't be pitching come playoff time, which is just silly for a team who should be one of the WS favorites going into 2013.

I agree with all of you, I really think this is a horrible idea. Aroldis was one of the most dominant closers in all of MLB last year, and for you to mess around with him now is just stupid. He is going to lose velocity throughout the season because of the amount of innings on his arm, and like some of you said, I will not be surprised at all if he gets hurt during the season. Plus, doesn't he only have two pitches? A slider and fastball? Can you be a starter with just two pitches?

Also, hitters will be seeing Chapman 2-4 times during the game, not just once like when he was closer, so hitters will have much more time to adjust to his speed and to adjust to his slider. Thus, getting better contact off of him.

I don't see the logic in this at all. But hey, if Aroldis is as dominant as he was last year as closer, then I'll eat my words.

I think he can convert eventually. I just hope he doesn't end up like Neftali Feliz did this year (missing most of the season) because the Rangers tried to make him a starter.

I don't like it at all, his arm was getting fatigued last year with him throwing closer/reliever innings. How much wear is going to happen with the multiplication of innings pitched compared to this year?

When you pay the guy big $$ ... it's hard to justify him only pitching 70 innings a year.

Chapman's arm will be stronger with preparation as a starter, and he'll probably be on a six inning leash for a while. He'll develop a change-up for a 3rd pitch, and with regular rest, his arm should be A-OK.

The Chapman collection RISES!

How do you say "mixed signals" in Spanish?

He was originally signed to be a SP. Then converted to a RP. Then back to a SP. Then became the Reds closer.

And now he's back to being a SP.

Dude must be SO confused at this point.

Next thing he knows he'll be playing LF , They should just keep him as a Starter, Reliever, or a Closer and stop moving him around. I understand it is alright to see what he does at each role, but just leave him as a closer or let him be a starter and that'll be the end of it.

Chapman didn't even throw 106 as a closer. He did that his first few appearances in the majors but later said he was overthrowing and stopped.

Looks like Aroldis Chapman will be on an innings limit but will still most likely be getting 30 starts in 2013.

"Aroldis Chapman is going to enter spring training next February as a starter. Should he also emerge as one, there will have to be a limit on the amount of innings that he throws in 2013 because he topped out at 71 2/3 frames as the Reds’ closer in 2012.

But that innings limit won’t be all that strict.

Reds pitching coach Bryan Price told John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer on Wednesday afternoon that he will “see where [Chapman] is in terms of innings and pitches after 25 or 30 starts.” Which is basically a full season for most healthy starting pitchers in the major leagues.

“We’ll know a lot more by the time we get to spring training,” Price added. “I don’t think there’s an absolute. You have to have a plan and hope it works. Any time you have a young pitcher and he’s going to surpass his inning total, there’s going to be questions if he gets hurt. We can’t be scared of that.”

There is zero chance the guy gets over 180ip this year. Just not possible.

He's on a innings limit. They are probably going to give him 25-30 starts. 180 is probably real close to that limit.

I'm always for moving a relief pitcher to a starter if they see potential in that spot. More innings=more chance to accumulate value. In some cases, they even waste arms.

Wish they would allow guys like Kimbrel to throw more innings in less appearances.

When they tried him as an SP in the beginning he was down around the low 90's by the 4th inning. I hope it works out, just don't see it without better secondary pitches.
