Exclamation Denard Span to the Nationals for Alex Meyer

The Twins got a great (and very tall) young pitcher in exchange.

Nationals Acquire Denard Span
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [November 29 at 3:31pm CST]
The Nationals announced that they acquired center fielder Denard Span from the Twins for minor league right-hander Alex Meyer. The Twins have confirmed the deal.

Span, 28, provides the Nationals with an established center fielder. His presence will presumably keep Bryce Harper and Jayson Werth in outfield corners. It could also impact the Nationals' interest in Adam LaRoche, since Michael Morse's primary position might now be first base. Alternatively, the Nationals could move Morse to a team seeking offense and continue pursuing LaRoche.

Span posted a .283/.342/.395 batting line in 568 plate appearances with Minnesota in 2012, numbers that compare closely to his career mark of .284/.357/.389. The five-year MLB veteran will earn $4.75MM in 2013 and $6.5MM in 2014. His contract includes a $9MM club option for 2015 with a $500K buyout.

That was a complete FAIL by the Twins! As a Twins fan I am happy that Span will have a chance to win something but for ALEX MEYER? WHO IS HE?!?! We could have gotten Jurjins and Hanson from the Braves before they signed Upton!!!!!!! AAAARRRRGGGHHHHH! I guess the bright spot for the Twins is that Revere will most likely play Center....

He's a 6-foot-9 machine, is who he is. Impressive stats.

The Twins' arms in their farm system consist of Gibson, Berrios and not much else. Meyer was needed, even though he's at least two years away.

As a Twins fan I like it, always liked Span but the concussion issue is hanging there and the Twins need POWER pitching.

Love this trade for my twins. Meyer looks (and pitches like) a right handed Chris sale

Yes really. The twins are stacked at outfield with hicks, buxton and arcia on their way up. It's evident that they NEED pitching, and that's what we got, and we got a good one. How can you not love this trade as a twins fan

Think this deal is even now but I think the Twins could end up winning easy.

If Meyer pitches well in the upper levels, he's going to be one of the best pitching prospects in the game.

Not really unexpected. I originally was thinking he would end up in Atlanta, but at least the Twins got something for him. Total selling mode right now.

Great trade for both teams, if Meyer doesn't work out as a starter, I can definitely see him becoming the next Jon Rauch; one of the top 20 Releivers in the game for a while. I also have Ben Revere in both my fantasy leagues, so watch him hit .310 with 55 Steals and 110 Runs scored next year. Woo-Hoo!

As someone who goes to 20-30 NB Rock Cats games a year any time the Twins get a nice prospect I am happy!

I would expect Meyer to start in Fort Meyers but be in New Britain by the all-star break. Maybe even start in NB

Really nice pitching prospect from U. of Kentucky. 6'9" and throws cheese. Twins definitely made out better in this deal. No use for Span with Aaron Hicks in the bigs by the middle of next year.

You're better off anyway. Bourn strikes out too much.

And still no home runs.

He would be considered more of a power pitcher than not.

That's fine; Juan Pierre and Scott Podsednik didn't either when they were top 20 players in fantasy baseball.

Happy for Mr. Span. That's a very good deal for him (more than he was getting with the Twins I think?) and he'll have a LOT of talent around him and I dare say the Nats could go deep in the playoffs for the next few years, assuming everyone stays healthy.
