Glad they did not give him 4 years
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- According to multiple major league sources, the Red Sox have reached a three-year, $39 million agreement with free agent Mike Napoli. Though he struggled to a .227 average with a .343 OBP, .469 slugging mark and .812 OPS with the Rangers in 2012, Napoli represented one of the top free agent options for the Sox, both because of his history of consistent offensive production (.259/.356/.507/.863 career line) -- demonstrating both middle-of-the-order power and considerable plate discipline -- and because the Rangers did not make him a qualifying offer, thus meaning that the Sox will not lose a draft pick for signing him. The 31-year-old has also been an absolute force at Fenway Park, hitting .306/.397/.710/1.107 with seven homers in 19 regular season games. Napoli figures to be the Red Sox' primary first base option. |

I think if he is really going to play first and not catcher, they could have looked at mark reynolds or carlos pena if they really needed someone to hit .210-.240 w/25-30 hrs...at 1/3 of that price. I'm not mad they got him, but they could use salty or lavarnway as good trade bait. I guess if Russ Martin can get 9mil a year to also hit .200 than anything is possible in today's mlb.

Looks like this may have hit a snag. He was supposed to be introduced today and it didn't happen. Neither side is responding to questions. Strange...

-From rotoworld yesterday:
""According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, Boston's deal with Mike Napoli could be in jeopardy due to a physical issue. Napoli's reported three-year, $39 million contract was agreed to on December 3, and Rosenthal says the Red Sox had planned to officially announce the signing at a press conference Tuesday. But that obviously didn't happen. The Red Sox evidently didn't like something they saw during Napoli's physical, though it's not clear exactly what it could be. The 31-year-old suffered a severely sprained left ankle in Game 6 of the 2011 World Series and dealt with quad and oblique issues in 2011 and 2012."" |
