Default Funny story about my mom and Mickey Mantle Rookie Card

Back around 1993 I was a delaer at llocal card shows in and around Dallas/Ft. Worth. I had a very good collection and was making decent money every weekend show. One weekend, there was a show at the Arlington Convention Center (next door to the old Arlington Stadium where the Texas Rangers used to play). On one Saturday I was at a show buying/selling/trading cards while my mom stood in line for tickets to go see Garth Brooks at Texas Stadium. I told her after the sell was over to meet me at the show.

A few hours later she showed up with tickets to the show. We walked around a little bit. She didn't know anything about the card collecting industry. I went up to one delaer that I knew and I saw that he had a Mickey Mantle Rookie Card. Can't remember what grade it was, but it was a nice card.

I asked him to pull it out and I covered the price on the card and asked my mom how much do you think this card costs? She knew who The Mick was and she guessed $300!!!!!!!!! The guy behind the table almost had a heart attack. I revealed the price, around $75,000!!! She said "that's almost more than a f**king house!!!!!" LMAO still thinking about that.

I know right. Once is a mistake. Twice is downright disrespectful and blasphemous.

The other problem is that they see the Mantle price and then think that means they can get $10K for their Boggs rookie.

I love the $1,000 Craigslist ads for tubs of late 80s Topps.

Haha that's a great story. I remember the look on my fiancee's face when I told her how much I dropped on my high-grade Koufax rookie and '53 Satchel Paige. Needless to say, that hasn't happened since

Honestly, that's what I call a cool story bro. Such a riveting tale, I honestly copy and pasted it to word, saved on my hard drive, backed it up on a jump drive, drove to the bank, put the jump drive in the safe deposit box, and will leave it there until my kids turn about 12 (when they can actually state their age, and ask what it is I'm showing them), when I will pick it up, put it in an old USB drive reader and relay this cool story to them and tell them, "kids, this is what a cool story should look and sound like...not like the stories your generation tells.

Worse story is my dad used to have a bunch of cards (including a couple Mantle rookies) back when he collected and he ended up giving some to his neighbor and throwing away the rest when he went off to college

Well it wasn't really a story was it? He basically just asked his mom, who has no knowledge of baseball cards, what she thought a card was worth and she was wrong about the value...not very moving

My dad had similar story. His mom threw away his shoebox of cards when he went to college. He knew for a fact he had at least 3 Mantles in there, among other things. He went to the grave never forgiving her for that. She was still alive when he died. The moral, don't leave your sh#$ at your parents house. It might get thrown away. My mom on the other hand made me come home after dad dies and go through EVERYTHING. She didn't want me to experience the same thing.

Only thing that bugs me is unless it's a PSA 10 1951 Bowman it's not a $75,000 card. At all.

If it was a 1952 Topps it would still need to be NM+ to fetch that amount. Seems unlikely to sell at some random card show.

I was going to post something very similar. Irks the hell out of me when people call the 52 Topps Mantle a rookie.
