The Baseball Writers acted like a bunch of teenage girls today trying to set an exapmple by not voting Craig Biggio to the HOF as a 1st Ballot Hall of Famer!
In my opinion they were dead set on no one getting in during this class to put Bonds and Clemens in their place. They wanted history to show that in the biggest PED class in history that no one was voted in, even if that meant innocent bystanders such as Jack Morris and Biggio would not get the required 75%. Only two people that are eligible for the HOF in the 3,000 hit club that are not in are Pete Rose (Gambling) and Rafael Palmero (PED). The other player with 3,000 is Derek Jeter and the only difference between him and Biggio is Jeter was lucky enough to be drafted by the $2 Billion Yankees instead of the Astros (Astros top scout at the time Hal Newhouser quit after the Stros selected Phil Nevin in the 1st round instead of Jeter). And for the writers who say some players are 1st ballot HOFers and some are not: you are either a HOFER or NOT! This is why no one watches baseball anymore and Football is America's Game! OK, now that I've had my rant, I feel better...

Yes, I thought Biggio should have got in. Biggio and Piazza are the only two players I thought deserved to get in through first ballot

I agree that Piazza should have got in. He is in the same boat as Bagwell, because writers assume he was using PED's even though there is no evidence or testimony to prove it, they judge him guilty.
I admit, there is a possibility they used, but you could say that about any player who played over the last 20 years, are they going to close the HOF and say no more players will ever be voted in again? t These writers were the same ones praising these guys during their careers, and none of them said a WORD during their career about suspicions.

In other news, baseball is finally joining the 20th century by using CELL PHONES to call for relievers. They clarified that not all teams would be making this jump. It's becoming an old man's game and a joke.

I've been a life long Astros fan and I was not happy as well, but Joe DiMaggio wasn't a first ballot HOFer either.

The World Series is usually about a 7 TV rating and the average REGULAR season NFL game averages a 10.

Biggio does deserve to be in the hall, although not on the first ballot. I believe only 21
% of hall of famers got in one their first ballot, I don't think Biggio is in the top 21% of all baseball players. He was a great player and deserves to be in just not the first time around!! just my two cents.

That's because they were a contender, how about Miami in a BRAND NEW stadium? The Astros couldn't give away tickets. Even when the Texans were the worst team in football, they sold out every game.

Biggio has no tangible evidence connecting him to steroids. 3000 hits is an incredible accomplishment, and he should have gone in.
If there is reason to suspect Biggio, why not Rickey Henderson or Dennis Eckersley? Rickey Henderson saw the biggest power spike of his career after age 30, while being Jose Canseco's teammate. Am I saying he did it? No, but I would not be shocked if it eventually came out that he did and I really wouldn't care either way. Look at Eck's numbers pre and post Canseco... it's telling really. What about Goose Gossage's #'s in his one year with Canseco? I, for one, have no problem electing steroids guys to the Hall of Fame. The Hall is a museum and its a shame that the greatest power hitter and pitcher of all time by the numbers are not in. We can't ignore history, even the negative parts of it. The Hall is full of guys who were drunks, racists, womanizers, amphetamine users etc. Why is moral character as a criteria limited to the use of steroids? Ty Cobb, there was a guy with great character. To paraphrase Russell Crowe in Gladiator, "Were you not entertained?"

I could care less what sport the "majority" of people watch...I don't watch a sport because everybody else is. I love baseball...I don't like football. Who cares what is more popular

Care to make a case why he is a HOFer that doesn't include the fact that he got 3000 hits?
Here's my argument for why he is NOT an HOFer: -Only finished in the top 5 in MVP voting twice in twenty years, and never in the top 3. -Only was an All-Star seven times in twenty years -Only finished in the top ten in WAR twice in twenty years. -Only ranked in the top ten in OPS once in twenty years. -Was a net negative WAR player (-0.2) over the course of his final three seasons, during which he collected his final 421 hits and passed the 3000 hit mark. -Was only a career .281 hitter, meaning that his 3000 hits were a product of getting tons of AB as the Astros leadoff hitter, rather than being a particularly good hitter. All the other members of the 3000 hit either hit over .300 for their career or have 400 HR except for four players: Kaline (399 HR, .297 avg), Rickey Henderson & Lou Brock (special cases because of their SB), and Robin Yount (who I don't think should be in the HOF). |
