Default Harper Bowman Chrome Auto - Iconic or over priced?

Hi All,

I was wondering what people think about the 2011 Bowman Chrome Bryce Harper auto. I know I opened a few boxes of chrome in the chase of the card and I do think it is a good looking card with a great auto. That said, do you think the card will stand the test of time and become an iconic card of the era? Obviously, he is an enormous talent and his performance will dictate the market but let me know your thoughts...

Thanks,
Jon

I do not think it will, and the reason is that he had so many Bowman/Bowman Chrome/Bowman Chrome Draft autos come out in such a short timeframe that none of them are the clear-cut best one. Many will say his 2010 Bowman Auto is the best, some say 2011 Chrome, and that will keep either of them from being seen as iconic

Once the hype completely dies off and he doesn't live up to his expected potential the value of all his cards will go down greatly.

I agree -- it's not like Pujol's Bowman Chrome Auto. Pujol's does have a number of auto's in other products from the same year, but it's not like Harper where there are autos from years before 2011 AND there are about 50 autos in 2011 from all different products. It is a nice card, but I do like the AFLAC as well as the 2010 Bowman Chrome USA buyback. If anything, the 2011 Bowman Chrome Superfractor Auto will be the iconic card, but you (or I, or pretty much everyone else) can't own it.

This ^ plus how high can his cards go? Say he hits 30-35 hr for 15 years, his cards have almost reached their cap. People will always collect his stuff but it is probably peaking right now.

Topps and their rookie/prospect rule shenanigans has greatly muddled the current young player market.

This is sometimes why i think prospecting is stupid-

you can get a nice hank aaron auto (one of the best to ever play) for $150 (a nice five star auto)

but a harper (who has never played an mlb game in his life) has autos going on ebay for $300+ (when 2011 bowman chrome first came out)

And this is why I think prospecting is awesome.

It's natural for people to better appreciate players that they've seen, or will eventually get to see, play. I'm a 34-year old lifetime baseball fan, and I have never in my life seen a single at-bat of Aaron, so it's natural that I have little attachment to him. Now that's not to say that I don't appreciate what I've heard and the stats I've seen, just don't have the same attachment.

Agree. As a part-time prospector, I'm obviously glad that people are willing to do that. I've yet to figure out who these collectors are that buy on the bubble.

yes, but how much do Aaron rookies go for...

1954 Topps Hank Henry Aaron Rookie Card 128 PSA Authentic Milwaukee Braves | eBay

now, imagine if they had parallels....

PSA 4 5 1954 Topps Hank Henry Aaron 125 RC Braves Rookie Should Be A PSA 5 | eBay

then, imagine if he had rookie autos, with parallels.

1954 Topps Hank Aaron Rookie 128 PSA 8 5 NM MT PWCC | eBay

I think they are the best looking but I understand maybe not the most valuable.

I have only recently started prospecting, but I am enjoying it thoroughly. I used to do nothing but collect legends/HOFamers. I love the value in a box of Bowman jumbo's- get 3 autos and some refractors. If you don't hit the big names, just hang on to the cards and you have a chance at making some money. But on the sets with the veterans and retired players it sucks when you get autos of Ken Griffey Sr and John Shelby. You end up spending $200 on a box and get $15 in return with no chance of improvement. With that being said, i still love buying SINGLES of the old guys, but when i bust boxes now, its usually just stuff that has prospects.
Back to subject, i think Bryce Harper has a "rock star" kind of personallity and i think his cards could climb in value as he continues to play. I think most players have a iconic card from their rookie season and i think in the future the 2011 Bowman Chrome auto could be it but we wont know for 5-10 years.

I think the price of the 2011 Bowman Chrome auto is ridiculous. $200-$225 for the base auto and I don't think the actual auto even looks that good. I picked up a 2011 Heritage Minors Blue Tint Auto /25 on ebay, that has a much nicer looking auto IMO, and thought about turning it into a Chrome one, but I couldn't do it without paying more money. I know that Heritage Minors isn't chrome, but it's still crazy to me.

I guess I could turn it into a Hank Aaron auto though XD.

I think it will be iconic if he lives up to the hype.

That being said "Chrome is king", yes he has other 2011 auto's but this is the one that matters most. 2010 had Aflac and USA buyback neither of which will defer the value from his chrome card as one was a buyback and the other is a High School card. Then in 2011 you have the Paper from Bowman and the Green foil from draft. Chrome will always be #1 at least IMO.

The auto has already fallen 33%. They were at 300 before his MLB debut, and they are roughly at 200 now.
