Default Need help on a set to collect

I'm not usually a baseball collector, so I'm looking for some input.

I've been collecting some basketball and football retired stars/HOF auto sets like the 1997 UD Legends football auto set and the 2009 Panini Famed Sigs basketball auto set. So, I'm looking to find a comparable baseball set and want some suggestions. What I'm looking for:

1) Preferably only HOFers, or at least HOFers/retired stars
2) On-card autos
3) I'm fine with numbered or non-numbered
4) Hopefully a limited number of SSPs
5) Good mix of vintage and modern players
6) Nice-looking cards
7) Hopefully at least a 50-card set

Any suggestions are welcome, just looking for someone to point me towards some options.

The 2012 tribute base autos are nice, not too many retired players though. 1998 donruss signatures you might like

2007 Sweet Spot Classic - but then again I am pretty biased towards it If you are looking for something new (where you could find cards alot easier) 2012 archives would be pretty good. Almost all retired players. Alot of fan favorites that might sell for $5-15 and then like 5-6 high end guys. Would probably be an affordable autograph set to collect, at least until you reach the high end players

Agree with Archives. There are a couple of autographed sets within this release. Here is the checklist: 2012 Topps Archives Baseball Checklist

isnt 07 sweetspot the year where the sweetspot autos are notorious for fading?

Yea many years of sweet spot are known for fading. Depending on what pen was used and what type of material it was signed on. Obviously when searching though you will be able to see what has faded and what hasnt faded. Some of the ball autos have faded bad but there are many glove and bat versions that havent faded

Actually, now that I think about it...2000 Fleer Greats of the game are even nicer, that's what I would collect if I could start all over!!!

If you're interested in gorgeous looking cards with on-card HOFer autos, I'd start with the Perez Steele postcard set. There are no SP/SSP's per se, but because of player deaths, some of the cards are very hard to find autographed (Roy Campanella, Kirby Puckett, etc.).

Thanks for all the great suggestions, guys. I've definitely got a couple in mind that I'm going to spend some time investigating this week.

I may do the Archives set just for the sake of nostalgia, and one of the late '90s or early 2000s sets suggested above.
