Default Math question of the day: Mickey Mantle+Deer Antler spray=

1000 home runs? 1100? Every time the old knee hurts hit the spray.

Bonus question:

Ted Williams+Deer Antler Spray+War Dodging= X home runs

1500?

Today's athletes are pathetic.

that's all.

""Greenies," as noted in the then-controversial and now absurdly tame Ball Four by Jim Bouton, were "pep pills -- dextroamphetamine sulfate -- and a lot of baseball players couldn't function without them." They were banned substances then and now. "

Drug use, rule breaking, etc. has always been a part of sports. You're naive if you think it's a recent problem.

you DO realize that there was cheating and players trying to find an illegal advantage even back in say the 50's and 60's too right???

Yeah...

Mickey Mantle is beloved by most of the baseball writers of Terence Moore's generation. And then of course there's Bob Costas, who loves Mickey Mantle as much as anyone and has vociferously criticized any players who have been tainted by steroids.

But integrity and character? Really? Even leaving aside Mickey Mantle's thousands of infidelities and the fact that he essentially turned all of his sons into alcoholics and drug addicts, there's the little matter of him abusing his body throughout his career. Mantle is famous for arriving at the ballpark with hangovers. In fact, those stories are often told as jokes; it's so funny that a well-paid superstar routinely wasn't in condition to play his best. Hilarious stuff.

Just so we're straight on this, though ... If you routinely drink yourself into a stupor and show up for work half-drunk, you've got more integrity and character than if you do whatever you can to play as well as you can, within the established norms of your contemporary colleagues?
Mantle was the apex of integrity!

well think about it, steroids have been around since the 50's. Roger Maris all of a sudden becomes a supreme power hitter for a short time, has emotional outbursts and rapidly loses his hair and then his career dwindles.......hmm

Look at Joe Morgan's stats after he was traded to the Reds. He didn't become Jose Bautista, but he went from a mediocre player to hitting 25-30 hr. Add in the size of Johnny Bench's arms compared to others and it sure looks like something was being passed around the clubhouse.

Integrity is just as uncommon now as it was back in the "good ol' days".

cheating and "Magic Elixirs" have been around since the start. Everyone has tried to get a competitive edge. Take a look at this:

According to writer Zev Chafets, Mickey Mantle's fade during his 1961 home run chase with Roger Maris was the indirect result of an attempt by Mantle to gain a substance-based edge. Chafets alleges that Mantle was hampered by an abscess created by a botched injection of a chemical cocktail administered by a "quack" doctor, Max Jacobsen. According to Chafets, the injection included steroids and amphetamines, among other substances.

Then you also have this:

an account of Babe Ruth administering to himself an injection of an extract from sheep testicles. The experimental concoction allegedly proved ineffective, making Ruth ill and leading the Yankees to attribute his absence from the lineup to "a bellyache".

Although nobody other then those that are accused actually know the truth. It's still an allegation. It's Human nature to attempt to be the best at what you do. Some will throw morality out the window when it comes to this, others wont.
