thanks for bringing a private dispute to the public man! Stay Classy! Also, I am not sure how you can call me scum, as I didnt have any time to ship your card, and when I realized I was behind, I threw in an extra hit! Card will be there soon, but this hasn't been pleasant.

My hands down number 1 underrated player in all of baseball has to be

Ben Zobrist!
A switch hitter who can field virtually every infield position and put up solid offensive numbers. It baffles me to no end how he's never made it to the Top 5 in MVP voting. And no, the "he plays in Florida" excuse will not work for me because of Evan Longoria and Giancarlo Stanton.

Brett Gardner and Martin Prado are pretty underrated IMO as well.

Max Sherzer is underrated IMO. That guy was straight beast mode last year for the Tigers.

Jason Kubel. Not a great player but far better than he gets recognition for. No one knows who he is.

As far as best underrated player, I'd agree with Konerko. What is surprising is that he's not only a fantastic hitter, he's the unanimous captain and well liked by the media in a large market. Usually guys like that get their just due. If he were a Cub, he'd be the mayor by now.

You named two guys that have 1 solid season under their belts.

Konerko has been there for a while now, with little recognition. Just look at his career numbers.....
point taken - i was thinking about the question more as a "who will outperform their perceived skills over the next few years" so I skewed to young players. With just a *sprinkle* of homerism applied as well.

EDIT: Konerko's Fangraph's page was very underwhelming actually, given the huge support in this thread. He's not a good defender at 1B and can't run the bases. plus it's not like his numbers over the past few years have been *that* great for a first baseman.

Career-wise Konerko is very underrated. But right now, for this year, I'd disagree.

Luke Hochevar. Considering my Royals keep shoveling this pile of dung millions of dollars every year to suck, he must be underrated.

I am talking about hobby.

Konerko, as people said.

How about Adrian Beltre? If he stays healthy, should have 450 - 500 HR by the times he retires. 10 20 HRs seasons. Great defense. 4 times GG, 3 times SS, finished 2nd and 3rd in MVP voting once each.

Maybe its the East Coast bias in me but Billy Butler seems way under-rated. You hear about Hosmer, Moustakas, and all these guys who are supposed to be awesome and then there is a player who actually does it and because he doesn't have 40 HR power he gets buried in the discussion.

Great point. I love "Country Breakfast"!

That being said, it'll be interesting to watch how Salvador Perez progresses. His injury last year stopped him from having a full season, but if he keeps it up he could be huge this year. Take a look at his numbers and all he does is rake. Plus he's a +defender. With all the others getting the buzz coupled with playing in KC, he may emerge as Mr. Underrated quickly.

PS. I love Braveheart. Great sig!

Opposite - overrated. Fielding, position premium, should have never won that MVP.

If we're talking real life, then Lee is one of the most overrated SP's out there. It's feast or famine with that guy. I actually got into a heated debate once about Ol' Cliffy. The guy I was arguing with actually made the case that when Cliff Lee has a bad game, it's completely not his fault. He's making perfect pitches, and it's just that the hitters are getting incredibly lucky.

As I said in my first post on this thread, it's hard to gauge who is under/overrated. I agree with you that Cliff Lee is not underrated but I disagree with your assertion that he's overrated too. The guy has averaged roughly 6 WAR per year for the last five years. He's pretty good!

No. No he's not. Completely the opposite. Since 2008, he's near the top of the league year after year and isn't recognized for it, for whatever reason. The amount of hate he got from Philly fans last year was laughable.

Default Underrated Players

For pitchers, it has to be Jered Weaver.
For position players, I say Brian McCann or Martin Prado.
