this kid Matt Reynolds is someone they should strongly consider for the role. 12.2 IP this season so far in 12 outings. 0 runs allowed. he also has 2 saves this season.

several times this year he's let a starter go a little longer than he should have and it cost them. I think this time he was trying to avoid that, although I tend to agree. With the way he was pitching, leave him in there. Of course it's super easy for us to sit here and second guess him...

Why don't they use Reynolds as their closer? 0.00 ERA

and a WHIP of 0.55?! next best on the team is Collmenter at 0.95, no one else under 1.00. I'd really like to see Reynolds get a shot at it, although if they do demote Putz, they'll almost certainly put David Hernandez in there...although he has struggled some this year too. I guess we'll see...

well...lets wait and see now how many more chances Gibson gives before he yanks Putz out of the closer role.

Gregorius missing a week after getting plonked in the head and Aaron Hill not being in the lineup hurts as well. I do think all things considered the team is better now than it was a couple years ago. It will be interesting to see how well they hold up through the course of the season though.
I didn't say the team sucks. I said it sucks compared to what it could have been. I would get used to some of these injuries because with the "gritty" players we got, the unnecessary plays they make end up wearing them down in the long run. Gregorius missing a week only hurt because he was extremely hot. In fact, it he didn't miss that weak I would be willing to bet that his average would have plummeted. His bat is still not ready (although Pennington isn't much better). This team is worse now than it was a couple years ago, last year, and worse than it could have been in the future.

They made some really good offseason moves and while I believe that the Braves got the better end of the deal in the Upton/Prado trade the fact of the matter is that J-Up would not be playing this well if he was still with the D-Backs. Too much bad blood with Towers shopping him every year. Martin Prado may be struggling right now but as a Braves fan, I am almost certain that by the end of the year he will be hitting around .300 like he has every year (except once). Prado is a perfect fit for this years team and can play gold glove defense at ANY position (except catcher) and he's real gritty, loves this game of baseball and a true team leader type. Paul Goldschmidt is going to have a breakout year, I just know it. Parra is playing really well, offensively and defensively.

The D-Backs are doing real well for a team that has three of their everyday players on the DL (including quite possibly their best player). D-Backs will be scary when they have got Eaton, Kubel and Hill playing everyday.

Only potential problem I can see is with their pitching. Kennedy is not throwing like an ace and Brandon McCarthy is just straight horrible. They also don't have an exclusive closer, too many blown saves.
Last years team was better than the average showed. Our Pythagorean record was 86-76 and that's with Upton dealing with a power-sapping thumb injury and CY missing time. It was pretty obvious that we would have been better than a 81 win team with those guys back to normal and Goldy and our younger pitchers being a year more matured.

The Dbacks like to trade all of their fan favorites for some reason. If that's true, Kubel will probably be traded next, lol
The Diamondbacks outfield has good depth but is average at best overall. Parra was a gold glover because of his arm but every single outfielder lacks range. Kubel is quite possibly the worst (despite a decent arm) and Ross is no better than Kubel. Offensively these guys are solid but the lack of defense is going to hurt the team and pitching staff. It's not like we would have been lacking the talent or depth if we kept Upton/CY instead of getting rid of them and adding Ross.

I know you will continue to root for the Dbacks but I can't truly support the team when it lets incompetent baseball minds like Towers and Gibson run us into the ground. Towers had a few nice trades in San Diego but his draft, and overall talent evaluation was piss poor. His drafts were quite possibly the worst ever. (I know he has the excuse of San Diego not letting him spend the money in drafts). Towers main strength is building a bullpen out of nothing, which he did a great job of doing when he first got here. Problem is, he decided to go against what he was used to doing and signed Putz to a 2 year extension and traded for Bell who is getting paid a decent amount of coin. This despite having younger guys that could step up, and being a master at picking up relievers from the scrap bin.

People want to bring up Upton's performance and say it wouldn't have happened in Arizona. Well whose fault is that? Upton gets off a great 2011 season and immediately finds himself on the block. This continues until the summer when Upton finally hits the boiling point and agrees it would be best for both sides for a departure. Upton is only 25 and people want to bring up consistency. How many 25 year olds have been up since 19 and done what he has done? How many guys would continue to play despite having a power-sapping thumb injury?

Upton could have been great in AZ too, I'd be willing to bet he still would have had a good season even if he wasn't traded. That's usually what hard-working younger guys do when they get older (and recover from a injury).

But hey, lets enjoy paying Prado until he is out of his prime. Let's ignore the fact that if we really wanted Prado, we could have waited a year and had them both. (With a nice 1 year fill-in from Chris Johnson). Lets enjoy watching Delgado and the other organizational depth at best minor leaguers do nothing for us.

I'll continue to watch us when a few of our guys are pitching or at-bat but I'm not going to enjoy us not being as good as we could have been. I won't enjoy being right in 2-3 years when Towers has somehow managed to drop us to last in the division and everyone is wondering what went wrong.

/End Rant :-)

I am more a fan by default. I live in AZ, and my wife had Dbacks season tickets when we met. I don't look too deep into the inner workings and backgrounds of a team, I simply do not care. There are bigger and more important things going on with me that I would rather spend time on.

I chimed in with what I know, which isn't much

**********5/1/13 Giants @ D'Backs - Tim Lincecum v. Brandon McCarthy***********

Game doesn't start for a while yet, but I'm bored at work, lol. Gotta say on paper I'm not optimistic about this matchup. Brandon McCarthy has been pretty lousy so far this year and I don't have any reason to suspect he'll do any better tonight. Really curious to see how much longer Gibson is going to stick with Putz at closer, and even more curious to see who will replace him if a move is made. A couple of us were saying last night that Matt Reynolds looks like he might be a good choice given that he's yet to give up a run in 13 innings so far this year.

Hoping for McCarthy to pull his head out of his proverbial ass and pitch a solid game tonight!

I sincerely hope you're joking

3 run dinger by Pennington gives the D'Backs a 3-1 lead!
