and JJ Putz gives up a 4 pitch leadoff walk and then leaves the game with some sort of injury...time for the Heath Bell experience

it looks like we may be seeing a new closer, atleast temporarily in Arizona. Putz apparently has something going on where he's feeling tightness in his elbow and its also making his throwing hand tingle a bit. he's going to be getting it looked at today so odds are he won't be available tonight and depending on what the evaluation turns up, he could be out for a while, hard to say.

if he does go down for a bit...someone else has to step in and close. One of three names stand out to me as being the most likely candidates. It would seem like David Hernandez might make sense as he's always been the guy who has stepped into that role when Putz hasn't been available in the past. However, he's been a little inconsistent lately and I'm not sure how I'd feel about that.

the other guy who I think makes sense is Heath Bell. I remember when we first got him in the offseason I thought to myself "why??? he was TERRIBLE last year, I thought we were trying to IMPROVE our bullpen." and then sure enough, the first outing where we came in he just got LIT....UP.... however, apparently during that outing someone on the coaching staff saw something. they worked with him and since then he's been a drastically different pitcher and actually looks pretty solid.

the third name on the list, who I'd absolutely love to see get the opportunity, but at the same time I feel like is more of a longshot to get it is Matt Reynolds. Dude has been lights out all year. 17 appearances, 0 runs allowed, and a WHIP under 0.50. Dominant.

if it were up to me, I'd move Hernandez to being the 7th inning guy, make Reynolds the 8th inning guy and put the Heath Bell experience in as closer and see how he does. And if he's really solid and locks it down, I might consider leaving him there even after Putz returns.

this may end up being a very interesting situation to follow. then again its entirely possible that Putz's thing will turn out to be nothing and he'll be back in a game or two.

I'd like to see Matt Reynolds take over the closer role, that kid has been lights out all season.

Paul Goldschmidt is a beast! I had high expectations for this guy ever since the day he was called up. He can rake and we haven't even seen him in his prime yet. I am expecting a season with 25-30 HR and 100+ RBI with an average around .300.

well you know how all the analysts like to use that "he's on pace for..." line.

so we're what...33 games in right now? so that would put him "on pace" for 34 homeruns and 132 RBI's.

I'm guessing he'll end up closer to 26 HR's and 110 RBI's although I'd LOVE to see him break 30 homers this year. honestly though, I'll be thrilled if he just improves over last year.

last season he was .286/.359/.490 and had 43 doubles (that's pretty solid) and had 20 HR's, 82 RBI's, 60 BB's and 130K's.

he certainly looks like he's going to improve on those numbers this year. I'll certainly be following his progress closely!

as far as Matt Reynolds moving into the closer's role...while I'd like to see it, I just don't think it's likely. to be Heath makes the most sense since he's got quite a bit of experience in that role and has shown significant improvement this season. I would like to see Reynolds move into the 8th inning set-up man role though.

He definitely has the power potential to hit 30 home runs and I'm sure he will finish more than just one season with 30+ HR. I'm not sure if he will reach that mark yet this year but it will happen. Yes, 43 doubles last season was impressive and I'm sure his numbers will be an improvement over last years when all is said and done.

I wouldn't plan on him doing a whole lot tonight, lol. I think tonight COULD end up being a really awesome pitcher's duel depending on which Wade Miley shows up. he was pretty dominant last season, and looked really solid the first few games of this season but his past couple of outings he hasn't been himself. hopefully he can step up and bring his A-game tonight though. would be really fun to watch him go toe to toe with Kershaw.

Wide Miley is sort of bipolar, he will either be great or terrible. He was awesome last season, in fact I was hoping he would have won the NL ROY. He was only a few points behind Harper and Harper won mostly because of his hype but 16 wins with an ERA under 3.50 is really good for a rookie. I expect him to win 15+ games again this year. We shall find out.

hmmm...exact same start as last night? leadoff double...then a sac to move him to third...then Goldy drives him in. that's what happened in the first last night, lets see if events repeat!
