Default Redemption Cards History

Does anyone know what company started redemptions? Or when they started?

The 1st one I remember was Upper Deck for Shaquille O'Neal 92/93

Topps had some exchange thing that yr as well they all had something back then . But those really weren't the issues yet. It didn't become an issue until they started the auto's . That's when it all went down hill due to players wanting more money or the agents . But i do think UD started it all . I would say it started late 90's .

I don't remember when they started, but I pulled one out of 1998 Topps (I think). It was for a Hot Glove Barry Bonds card. Worth over $100 at the time. I was ignorant with redemptions so I just filled it out and stuck it in an envelope and threw it in the mail. 15 years later I still haven't gotten anything....lol

Fleer had a redemption in their 94 BB set for the All Rookie Team. That is the first one that I remember.

UD had a redemption program with Collector's Choice where if the player on the card hit a home run on one of the dates listed on the card, you could redeem said card for a better card.

I won with KGJ, lost with Chipper. Does that count?

If you want to get all technical about redemptions then id say the first ones were in the 70s/80s on the wax wrappers. Send in a few wrappers/check and get a full sheet/pages/whatever.

In terms of current redemptions id say this is close but I don't know.

Haha, Topps: unfulfilling redemptions since 1998!
