Default Variation Identification

This one is for the older (30 ish) members of the forums. I recently found this card below in my large collection of '80s-'90s commons:

Nothing special. Nolan Ryan 1991 Topps card #1. People have probably seen hundreds of these over the course of their lives... However, the back kinda threw me off...

I have plenty of 1991 Topps cards in my collection, however this is the first white back I have come across. I have searched the errors/variations sites to see if there is anything about this card, but nothing comes up. It's not a Tiffany, the card stock isn't white and there is no glossy coating on the front. Not Dessert Shield; no logo. And all the 1991 Nolan Ryan #1 cards on COMC have the red ink on their back.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help in advance.

Not sure if you trying to troll me, but there was tons of counterfeiting of cards specifically Topps 80s/90s because it was pretty easy to do and you could make money. I have no information that this is the case in the instance of OPs card, but was rather speculating as it may be possible. Like the OP I do not have the expertise to distinguish why there is a different color on the back of the card.

Might be a pre production sample to determine what color backs they wanted to use that year. Other than that, I have never seen that card before in my life.

Cool find. I'd ask the guys on the PSA Nolan Ryan registry. It's not listed there but I'm sure one of them will know what it is.

Report back here if you find out.

Is there any chance it was exposed to sunlight and it faded or maybe the ink was low during printing? Just some ideas.

This is what I was thinking when I first saw the card, but there is no mention of any other card (Ryan or otherwise) that has this defect. Also, the loss of color seems to be too uniform and its only the red color that is missing.

Not trolling...seriously not sure why a commonly found card like that would be counterfeited.

So, I posted this topic on the Collector's Universe Forums and from what they said, it looks to be a fairly common error throughout the years with Topps. Pretty much just missed the red ink during the printing process. I don't think the error is common with this card in particular, but, then again, I don't think these errors are typically listed in the registry.

Technically a misprint, not an error, but still an awesome card.

Would PSA note the missing ink?

Yes it is a common printing error. It missed the magenta(red) part of the printing process. It is a very cool error of a HOF player. I collect similar cards and because of the print error the card went from worthless to a $10-$20 card depending on how you market it.

The attached picture is of the 1992 Bazooka 53 Topps Archives Quadcards with color progressive backs. I got lucky and found 3 complete sets of these.
