Alex Rodriguez Suspension Now 162 Games
By Charlie Wilmoth [January 11, 2014 at 10:45am CST]
The result of Alex Rodriguez's appeal is in, and he will be suspended for 162 games, Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets.

jmscoggin 01-11-2014 11:50 AM

He will appeal this no doubt. Can he still play this year while appealing? It may not matter as an appeal may be able to be heard and decided before the start of the season but I do wonder.

Jaypers 01-11-2014 11:51 AM

Frees up more $ for Tanaka.

I believe if he keeps appealing he can keep playing right? Now, that doesn't mean that Girardi is gonna let him walk onto the field. If Girardi is smart (which I truly believe he is), he'll sit him on the bench.

This was his appeal for this.

Djameson79 01-11-2014 11:53 AM

He can't Appeal anymore, that was his appeal.

Good news for the Yankees. At least one year of his ridiculous contract won't have to be paid.

Ajax1723 01-11-2014 11:53 AM

I think he was trying to get some sort of temporary restraining order against the arbitration ruling, but the surpreme court doesn't really give that that often, so I doubt it works.

dherm360 01-11-2014 11:54 AM

so he can play in the playoffs

Nope.

Alex Rodriguez Suspension Now 162 Games
By Charlie Wilmoth [January 11 at 10:45am CST]
The result of Alex Rodriguez's appeal is in, and he will be suspended for 162 games, Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets. Rodriguez plans to appeal the suspension in federal court. The suspension will cover the full 2014 season, and also the postseason, Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown tweets. The suspension previously was 211 games.

A-Rod's suspension for the entire season means the Yankees will save about $24MM against the 2014 luxury tax threshold. Rodriguez's luxury-tax figure is $27.5MM, but Joel Sherman of the New York Post notes (via Twitter) that the Yankees will be assessed about $3.16MM of that, since 183 days, and not 162, counts as a year. The Yankees will also save $25MM in salary.

That savings could give the Yankees more flexibility to pursue Masahiro Tanaka or other free agents. Also, the Yankees may now look for another option at third base, even though they have Kelly Johnson -- a report earlier today indicated that they could consider Michael Young or Mark Reynolds, both of whom are free agents.

That is what I remembered. He was setting himself up for an end around if the arbitrator came back with an unfavorable decision. That is what happened so I'm wondering about the end around. However, the others are probably right. Since that was the appeal it is now official. He won't be able to play even if he is able to get a federal court to hear the case. Not a Yankees fan so not thrilled this bailed them out of their stupid contract but happy that karma is biting the centaur.

He can play golf with the rest of the Yankees

:)!:special:

Ajax1723 01-11-2014 11:57 AM

So technically it could be up to almost 200 games, but I don't think they will get that far.

Hate A-Rod and the Yankees. That said, I wish him well in his lawsuit.

Bosox34 01-11-2014 12:06 PM

As a Sox fan I was hoping he wouldn't get suspended as he would just make the Yankees worse

Me too surprisingly. Probably the only thing I hate more than Arod is the Yankees. Really has me in a quandry. If they were both on a sinking boat and I could only save one I would shoot more holes in the boat.

groundsupport 01-11-2014 12:09 PM

he is a dbag, but he has never failed a test during the banned substance years.. 162 games is kind of BS.

Agreed. I was hoping for 50-75. I am still stuck on how much I loved him when he started out. I really thought he was going to be a legend. Even with all of the d baggery he has done I still pull for him and it pisses me off. I normally have no patience for people that conduct themselves the way he does but that nostalgia is hard to seperate from.

Lol, don't read my post after that one then. The soft(er) side came out and I'm afraid I will have let you down.

I think the suspension more has to do with the interfering with the banned substance investigation than the actual steroid use itself.

it should be 100 games max if anything..

gradedeflator 01-11-2014 12:17 PM

Gosh if I were the Yankees, would you rather have ARod in 2014 in his age 38 year (he will turn 39 in July) or have him sit out 2014 only to be back on the roster in 2015 in his age 39 year?

Obviously there is no way the Yanks could pick and choose when he serves the suspension, but would have been good for them if they could have wiped out one year on the back end of the contract. This assumes they are stuck with the entire remainder of the contract and don't trade him or anything (which I can't imagine another team willing to do that)
