My goal was to collect as many Red Sox cards as I could, and also complete sets of each release.

Back then it consisted of Topps, Fleer and Donruss. It was a blast opening each pack, and I wasn't disappointed that I didn't pull a big hit, because there was no big hit. So here's the real secret, the card companies ruined this hobby for kids long before I ever thought about it. By making everyone chase one card out of a box, and making "base" cards worthless, they've completely gutted the heart and soul of the card collecting community.

I'm 31 years old today, and I still collect cards and build sets, and I'm still stoked to pull Red Sox cards. In fact I pulled a David Ortiz Dick Perez insert out of a pack of retail heritage at wal mart and I was wicked happy as us Mainers say. Point being, nothing can truly ruin the hobby for you except for your own perception of what it is. If you're a 12 year old kid collect your favorite team or your favorite player. If you get a jersey or autograph awesome, if not trade for the players you love. That's the whole key to collecting, and what once made this hobby great.

Anyways, take care guy. Best of luck to you.
Wow, you just conjured up a huge stroll down memory lane for me. I am 31 as well, and 1987 was when I first began collecting. Back in the day where packs of Topps were 40 cents a pack ($14.40 a box....wow), Donruss was the 2nd most expensive pack to buy, and Fleer was the hot set that year so you felt awesome if you were able to get your hands on a few packs...and the big thrill was pulling Mike Greenwell, Bo Jackson, Mark McGwire, Jose Canseco, Will Clark or Kevin Mitchell rookies LOL Ahhhh memories....exactly why 21 years later, even though we're all frustrated with the card companies and the direction the hobby is going at times, I still LOVE cracking open a pack of cards.

It's funny to think about that now isn't it? I remember getting my allowance and going to the closest general store with my dad and just blowing the whole wad on packs of 87 Topps. At one point I must have had 20 Barry Bonds cards and I traded them all to fill out my Red Sox sets. LOL.

My dad grew up with Jeff Reardon, finished high school a year behind him, and the year he won the series with the Twins he came back to his home town and met all of us. My fondest memory is getting my 87 Topps Reardon card autographed by him. Still have it to this day.

Things have changed so much, but it doesn't have to be all that different. I still open cards because there's a kid in me that wants to get my favorite player, and yes there's a gambler in me that wants to get a card that'll pay a car payment or a months rent. But while those are few and far between the joy of collecting will always drive me to continue to buy cards and build sets. I hope I never lose that love.

My first pack of '87 Topps came from the grocery store. All the other boys at the summer day care I went to were collecting them and bringing them there and and trading them (before that the big craze for us was the good 'ol Garbage Pail Kids....those were sweet....except for the LAME-O movie they came out with LOL), so I had to be a part of that as well. To me the BEST card design Topps cranked out during the 80s. I still remember hearing about this card shop the boys always talked about going to, then getting my dad to take me there, and I was in absolute awe. Then that same year I got to experience my first card show, and the guy signing autographs was none other than Wally "Absorbine" Joyner....gotta love Chris Berman and his nicknames. Stood in a long line, paid $5, and ended up getting to shake his hand twice. I felt like I was the king of the world that day.

Then what got me completely hooked on baseball as well as the hobby was in 1989, our local minor league team was a Class A farm team of the Cubs, and with the Cubs being on WGN I was able to see most of the games on TV, so it was so neat seeing guys pop up on there who at some point played here, and of course that was the year the Cubs won the NL East, then promptly got dumped by the Giants, and then you had the Battle of the Bay that got hit by the earthquake. Have been a die-hard (and loooong suffering LOL) Cubs fan ever since even though our team hasn't been affiliated with the Cubs for a long long time.

I still remember Score being such a big deal when they first hit the market in '88, if for nothing else just the fact that you now had a fourth player in the hobby going against the Big Three...then Upper Deck in '89 (debuting at a whopping couple bucks a pack), then Leaf producing their landmark set the following year, all the while being able to get all the other major brands for like .40-.50 a pack.

If only we had the ol' Wayback Machine (anybody ever watch Mr. Peabody on the old Bullwinkle cartoons?)....I would soooo love to travel back to the late 80s just to relive those collecting times....those memories are priceless.

You can't be serious?!?!?! It's hard enough to believe that you actually drive around to different stores feeling/searching packs for cards........but then you admit it? Wow, I am either embarassed for you......or admire you for having the guts to admit something like that. There has to be better ways to spend every Wednesday morning......how about......hmmm lets see....going to work? You have to be spending more money on gas than what you're making for doing this, right?

One time I was at walMart and I was picking up a few blaster boxes (I open them all and mix the packs and give them to some of my therapy case kids) and I saw a kid, maybe about 15 or so. He was taking handfulls of packs and bending/squeezing them. Must have gone through maybe 100 packs or so.

I noticed a guy in his late 30's standing behind us. I thought he was doing what I was doing and watching this kid. He had it down to an art...just a couple of seconds for each pack. I took a step forward to grab a couple of blasters and the guy behind me put his hand on my shoulder and says "hold on a second bud, give me a minute." I just looked at him and said OK. After maybe another minute and maybe 30 or so more packs, the guy steps forward.

The guy says to me "excuse me fella, time to go to work" and then smiles. He walks up to the kid and pulls out a badge and an ID. He was the regional quality control manager but was also an off duty police officer. He made the kid gather the nearly 150 packs and took him into a room by customer service. He was gone for a good 15 minutes and came back without the kid.

When he walks back to me, I am still in line near the cards and he starts straightening the packs. He sees me still in line and says "its a shame he's going to be in trouble over baseball cards. I ask him what he means. He said the the kid was having charges filed against him for destruction of property and theft by deception. The kid either had to pay for all of the packs or have the charges filed. All in all, it was probably 500.00 worth of packs at minimum.

Never did find out what happened, but there was never anything in the newspaper so i guess someone paid for the packs for him to keep him out of trouble.
