Default Season Long Flip Quest, starting with an 89 UD Yasiel Puig Rookie?!? - Join in!

So, last year about this time, I did a flip to go from a 1989 Fleer baseball card set all the way up to a 1999 Topps Traded Josh Hamilton rookie autograph. It took 5 weeks! You do read ALL my threads, right? Here is the thread: My Quest for 1999 Topps Traded Josh Hamilton Auto

Cliff's notes: It was a blast, and it took about 5 weeks. Plus, I got some cool extras!

I remember having so much fun with it, but I've been busy with making custom cards. Plus, I don't really want to spend all this time buying/selling/trading to get something insane for my PC. I don't ever keep anything that is worth hundreds of dollars in my PC.

On top of that, I've been uninspired as to what to start with. A red paper clip? Been done. Fleer set? Yeah, last year.

I GOT IT!!!! What about a BOX full of stars/rookies/inserts? That'd be cool!

Ehhh, no it wouldn't.

So then, a light bulb went on ....What if I started with a custom? People seem to like them, and I've been itching to do this:

a 1989 Upper Deck Star Rookie of Yasiel Puig! Honestly, since these are custom art pieces, it really could be of anyone.

There is my starting point! The twist is that I will make one with your own custom writing. We can say something about you, your kid, etc. And, it really can be of any player you like. These would be GREAT for TTM / IP autographs.

So the end result? Well, I don't have one. I've already accomplished going from a $5-10 set to a $250 card. Instead, I want to see how much and how big I can get by the end of the regular season. I think this can be mega fun.

I'm gonna set my sights high, and see if I can end up getting a house or yacht or something, when all is said and done. Or maybe at least a nice small collection of PC stuff. I'll record every transaction right here.

RULES
- I will trade off as many of the custom 89 UD style art type cards to see what I can get off of them, looking for a sell value of $20-30 per custom traded.
- I will also trade/sell off whatever I get for them.
- The game is over at the end of the A's season. If they don't hit the post season, the last day is it. If they make it to game 7 of the world series, then that marks the end of the flip quest.
- make an offer ... will also check buckets!

Alright, so Nate is the first guy to get this puppy off the ground! Nate, the card is in the mail, plus a little something extra for you

Deal one in the books:

4/17/14
Card(s)
2012 Bowman Chrome Gold Refractor Yoenis Cespedes #/50

Cash
-$1.93 (shipping)

This is going to be a little difficult to part with actually, because I am a big A's fan, and love me some Cespedes. We will forget the fact that the A's lost to the Angels in extra innings last night, and that I stayed up until 2 to see it.

Side note: Have y'all read what Puig has gone through? Wikipedia him and read the first few paragraphs - INSANE!!!

Anyway, here it is. Thanks Nate for taking a pic - it would have killed me not to have shown it until early next week when it arrives

If anyone still wants a Puig, let me know - I'm still up for trading another.

So now you all can PM me with offers for the Cespedes!

There was a special on Puig this morning on ESPN about his defection. I'm sure it will be re aired throughout the day. Love that you chose the '89 design to get started.

Hello to a fellow Houstonian! That is crazy about Puig - I wish I would have seen it.

The article is on their website. Pretty long, I've only gone through a couple of chapters while on break. Good read though.

Lots of Houstonians in here!

You betcha! Hello to you too! And they are indeed re-airing the segment. It's like a good 10 or so minutes long and is one of those topics that tick down from the side.

P.S. I sometimes go to Robert's Sports Collectibles shop on Beechnut...usually just for Ultra Pro stuff. It's the only card shop in all of Houston that I know of since I got back into the hobby 2 years ago. Are there other shops that you know of as I've not been able to find any.

P.S.S. The 1999 Topps Traded Josh Hamilton auto was the first card I ever paid more than $200 for. It booked for $500 at the time. I paid $295 and now it's at $300 ugh. But that's alright I never plan on selling it.

I know it wasn't directed at me, but I always go to Odyssey on Fry. I'm actually out in Katy, that's the closest to me. It's a pretty good shop, but small. The owner is really nice.

Thanks I'll have to check it out. Robert's shop is small too...homely feeling. But I do want to find a shop closer to 290 and Hollister.

I lived in Alvin from 1983-1986 and went to Stephenson Elementary for 1st-3rd grade. Haven't been back since. I'm 36 now. Alvin is still a bit of a hike from where I'm at. And I go to the shop just for toploaders and one touch magnetics. I miss the LCS feel of the 80's...and I guess I keep going because I'd hate to see him close. He is very old fashioned and doesn't even use the internet. I think he hopes it's just a passing fancy lol. Hard to extract anything better than 10% off Hi book value from him lol. But he gives me deals on stacks of commons that I look for to complete sets.
