Default When was the last time you paid for an autograph?

I've never actually paid for an auto (I've paid for attendance to an event and got an auto). When was the last time you paid directly for an auto and why did you do it? Was it worth it to you?

I made out some checks to the Tigers Autographs for a Cause and one to Scherzer for Cards for a Cause. I'll be sending another TTM in care of PastPros. I do it because of some people I want and/or cards I really want signed.

Three days ago. I wouldn't bother making a distinction between paying admission to an event and paying for an autograph if the primary or exclusive reason for your admittance is to obtain a particular autograph.

I wouldn't have paid for them if they weren't worth it to me, and some players will only sign for money. The experience is usually the most valuable part IMO. Having even a modest price placed on the autograph weeds out a lot of opportunists who stumble across the event and are getting junk signed (plastic balls, generic autograph cards, home-printed game tickets, etc), and I find that desirable.

John Unitas, just a few months before he passed away suddenly. I'm so glad I did, I felt just like a little kid seeing him in person.

I do it quite often. If I have something I am going to want to keep for my PC and don't want the worries of not getting a good signature. I will pay knowing I am going to get a nice piece for my PC.

I'll do it for Brooks quite often. He's so damn cheap, and it's always worth $50 to be able to chat with him for a little bit.

Paid in January for a February signing. All proceeds went to the team charitable foundation.
Would have paid that amount for his auto at a regular signing event anyway.
$20 for Mark McGwire (also got Zach Lee with him).

I assume you mean a paid signing with someone that you attended or mailed off specifically for signature and not buying something previously signed via ebay or similar marketplace?

My last paid signing and one of very few I have ever done, was Ralph Branca. An out of state buddy was going to a show that Branca was appearing at and offered to get something signed for me. The charge was $25 per item, a bit more than I'd normally pay for a living player of his experience. However, given his age and what I have seen offered online for sale, I opted for 3 cards (2 49 Bowman rookies and a 52 Topps), although I would have liked to add a 51 Topps Blue Back as well, but didn't have a decent one to send and already had a beater copy signed.

I also had someone (also out of State) offer to get Pete Rose for me and it was $40 at the time. Again, more than I would have liked to pay, but got his 64 Topps signed, as already signed copies were much more expensive and I had the card already. I was chasing the entire run of trophy cards, signed, and this was a huge addition at the time.

The only other paid signing I can think of was Richie "Dick" Allen. This one was $35 through the mail via MAB. Yep, you guessed it, more than I really wanted to pay, but I needed that 65 Topps trophy card signed and I had not seen one listed on ebay to that point. Had the price been a bit cheaper, I would not have had to wrestle with the choice between the much needed trophy card or the more collection friendly 71 Topps Dodger card. I would have just gotten both, but I struggled paying that $35, even for one! I am still not sure I made the right choice, as I still seek that 71 card signed...

I don't think I have and can't remember ever actually having paid for an autograph in which I was present when the item was signed, as a matter of fact. I've gone to a number of signings, not a huge amount, but maybe 20-30 guys worth over the years at different times, but all were free.

1989 - Mitch Williams for five bucks at a card show.

A few years later I was playing for a MABL team in Indianapolis when a couple of kids asked us to autograph a ball for them. We did it, and got a kick out of it, but after that experience I have never asked another person for their autograph and likely never will.

I don't understand, do you not feel you should have to pay for an autograph? What was it about you signing for kids that made you feel this way?

Last year's National convention. Besides the autographs as part of the Super VIP All Access package, I purchased a ticket on the last day for Al Kaline. Meeting the sports stars are definitely worth more than just buying an autographed item off e-bay.

Most recently - I paid for Randy Myers auto in order to complete an Orioles poster I was working on. Bad thing was that the price was supposed to include index cards signed by the two other Nasty Boys (Dibble and Charlton) but those never arrived. Still, happy to at least get Myers.

In 1988 my dad paid for a Rose auto at a show in Chicago and I recall standing in line for that.
Won a free Rose auto signing in Rosemont about 5-8 years ago.

Holy Crap! I guess I technically never paid for an in-person auto

Fergie Jenkins a couple years ago for his charity. Was at the old stadium in Mesa. The only IP auto I've ever attempted.

2 years ago. I paid up for a autograph jersey of Gerrit Cole. It was for Pirate Charities with proceeds going towards a Miracle Field here in my county so handicapped kids can play baseball. That same summer I purchased my avatar. Which wasn't cheap but the center of my collection.
