So this was in 2012---are the penalties just being handed down now?????

also---I'm am not surprised. When thousands of dollars can be made integrity goes out the window. (not for everyone of course)

GAI's bad publicity was from grading fakes and altered cards.
That's very different from shilling.

Here's the court document, Keith Olbermann was the winning bidder on 2 shilled items. 2463 auctions between 2002 and 2009, 347 "victims" were identified in the 2463 auctions. Based on the governments calculation total losses to those victims was $615,809.00

As I have said countless times none of this surprises me and this hobby has been filthy for so long!

More and more I could care less about this hobby and other than my own collecting needs I've pretty much removed myself from it.

I'll collect my autographs (mostly golf) crack some golf related items and buy stuff from local estate sales. Other than that this crap can kiss my ass- this was the last straw and after 45 years...I'm done!

Yet whenever someone like myself tries to talk about the problems in the hobby and suggests ways to improve things, we usually get shouted down...

A few months back I made a comment about why it should be a requirement to include ebay names linked to user names. It would help to catch shillers, but many members did not like this idea. Wonder how many users on here shill auctions.

And just how are they going to enforce that? Are you going to make it a requirement for people to use Ebay so they can access BO? People have multiple Ebay names and it's not possible for Blowout to track them. Requiring people to have an Ebay name tied to their blowout account is just going to decrease traffic to blowouts site.

It's news again because of the names involved in the shill bidding were revealed (some again and others new revelations) and some of those who lost money are now being publicized including Olberman and Hal Steinbrenner. I believe there was a separate post about Hal but here's the NY Daily article again:

People lose money without the present status quo, so their yelling at someone trying to make positive hobby change isn't all that surprising, I suppose.

It's not like we should all just assume simple collectors populate this and other boards, can we? There are bigger, established interests at play in getting men to essentially pay thousands... for pictures of other men...

His way of "improving" is to get rid of everything he doesn't like. This includes parallels and relic cards.

Wrong.

My way of improving if to get manufacturers to provide good value for money in every single box, instead of making opening a box a huge financial gamble.
