Are there any factory sets prior to 1985?

I have been seeing some Topps factory sets for sale lately that are from 1983 and 1982. Everything I can search through says that there was a factory set in 1974 and then they started in 1985 until now. I would love to get a factory 1983 set if possible but I am hesitant.
I did hear that maybe Topps gave out or sold sets to emplyees, but I don't know for sure.

1984 as well, and if I remember right, in 1982 if you sent in 120 sticker wrappers and $12.00 you got a 1982 set directly from Topps.

I would sure like to get one of them for my collection, the keys should be gradeable.

I have a couple of the 1983s and 1985s, those sets are stunning.

The sets you see on eBay are legit, my 1982 set looks exactly like that, except I took the cellophane off (idiot).

I am considering the 83 for the Gwynn. I wouldn't open it just put it on the shelf. It is a shame. I saw a 82 just go and it had a decent box to it. This 83 on ebay right now looks like a cheese box with an address label on it.

KMD, the 83 sets you have, are they plain boxes or do they have some sort of design to them? Also is there any idea of the value of it?

The 1983 Sets came in plain brown boxes with shipping labels on them and some Topps tape. Some of them came without them.

The ones I have are not for sale, I'm putting them away for my girls. The one's I've seen on ebay are legit, and I might go after the 1982 set if the price is right.

KMD - did you see how much those sets went for. I understand how popular Ripken is but I thought that the 83 set with Gwynn, Boggs and Sandberg would have gotten a little closer. Were there any print runs on these?
I ended up going after some autographed baseballs instead. I am going to start a new thread a little later on. I have a bar in my basement that I am filling up with autographed baseballs. HOF only for now. I will get a few pictures.

No, I didn't look. The 1982 is much, much rarer than the 1983 or 1985. 1984 is tougher than 1983 & 1985. For what its worth, every Ripken I took out of a 1982 Topps Factory set got a PSA 10.
