Upper Deck combines manufactured letters with plastic autos in upcoming basketball release

May 25, 2011 at 5:01 PM

By Chris Olds | Basketball Editor

Upper Deck is taking one part UD Glass and one part past letterman releases and meshing them together in its next basketball product with one name thatís pretty big in the basketball card world.

Michael Jordan.

The companyís 2011 All-time Greats set will arrive on June 14 with Letterman autographs as seen above encased in PETG plastic and signed on the smooth surface instead of the fabric. Each four-card box will contain three base cards and one autograph ó each of the same player ó with just 20 players on the productís checklist. Each case includes just three boxes.

The base set will consist of 200 cards, while the insert lineup will include Storybook Career booklet cards, One-on-One Dual Signatures booklets, the Lettermen autographs and All-time Nine signatures, which are 1/1s. There will be no sticker autographs in the product, according to the company.

The 20 players on the checklist? Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Julius Erving, Magic Johnson, Bill Russell, Larry Bird, Steve Nash, James Worthy, Jerry West, John Havlicek, David Robinson, Alonzo Mourning, Hakeem Olajuwon, Walt Frazier, Derrick Rose, Clyde Drexler, Grant Hill, Chris Paul, Larry Johnson and Anfernee Hardaway.

Didn't they already do this with 08-09 SP Threads? Double your fun, haters of manufactured patches and non-on card autos!

The title alone makes upper deck sound like a terrible joke.

Kinda similar to 2008 Topps Letterman for Football.

I think the cards look great judging on the two in the story. Interesting idea too and they will be hard signed it looks like. Plus, with a checklist like that it is hard to go wrong depending on the price point.

I will admit that I like the look of these cards too. I just can't stand manufactured patches or sticker autos. I'm having a debate with myself at the moment if I like or dislike autographed "plastic".

I agree, the wording was ahorrible. When I read the headline, I thought they were using "plastic autographs".

It seems like that same old design, just with a signed plastic window - I'm not too impressed. I think the manufactured letter and patched have been done over and over. Maybe it's time to try something else?

My biggest gripe with this product is that if they were only going to pick 20 players, how did some of them make the list? No offense, but I wouldn't want to shill out almost $300 for a grant hill, penny, nash, or johnson box. Yeah, some of the players might be worth it, but there's many other bigger names they left out. Just think the checklist could have been improved. As for the signatures on plastic, something just doesn't seem right about that.

Actually, other than Jordan and LeBron, the best ones to get are Grant Hill, Penny, and LJ (as well as Mourning). Can probably be debated that most of those would also be better than getting a LeBron box

Yup. I'm always shocked when see people write stuff like that. Those are great pulls! However, I think the price of the product is too high. Just my opinion though.

Would have been perfect if those were real nameplate patches, as I have never been a fan of the autographed swatches; auto on the plexi over the patch looks bada$$, however not a big fan of the MJ blue on blue, should have picked a different color to sign in...

Depends on your purpose of buying the product. I would imagine most people that are buying boxes/cases of the stuff aren't buying it and keeping the pulls, rather they are selling everything they pull. Give me Grant Hill, Penny, LJ, Mourning any day of the week over Bird, Dr. J, Russell, and Rose if I'm selling what I pull.

But hey, if you buy any of the product I'll gladly trade you a Bird or Russell autograph or even one of the #'d base cards for the same exact card of any of the guys I listed. Do we have a deal?

Why? You collect him so surely you'd be happy to see more cards of your favourite player?

I'm bored of the manufactured letter patches. However, the list of players is superb. I'm excited to see more of the cards in a few weeks' time.

I rather have my sigs on the letter/swatches, but that's just me. Makes the swatch much more special.
