wow !!!!!!!!!!! thats bleepin crazy. i cant beleive that neither topps or upper deck will make basketball anymore.

i know paninni does a great job with the design for soccer cards. so hopefull they will do a good job on these. topps has come out with some really ugly boring designs that past few years.

Can anyone tell me who Panini is? The only thing I have heard about them is they make a good sandwich.

If you were around in the mid/late-80s you may remember them from their sticker books.

YouTube - 1980's Panini Baseball Commercial

Apparently they are still big in the European soccer card/sticker market.

As soon as I saw the Cardinals sticker in the YouTube video I knew exactly who they are. I guess they will save money with Panini but shouldn't they have asked or checked up on the collector's opinion first?

One more question, I have nieces that are into Hannah Montana so I have seen the stickers in those boxes but if Panini produces sports stickers will they really catch on? I doubt it but like I have said before I am a definite amateur at all this.

I didn't know if the NBA was trying to save money going with Panini but I might have read too much into it.

I'll save money...but then this is BK, and I haven't bought much.

Too bad for them UD will likely keep their exclusives since they have broader UDA memorabilia deals and you'll never see Jordan/Lebron/Kobe autos in NBA card releases for the forseeable future.

This is interesting. Rumor is, is that UD is losing their MLB license after the 2009 season. Things are going to get real interesting around here.

WOW that would be interesting. I know I'm not alone in this thinking but I REALLY wish the NHL/PA would not extend the UD exclusive deal for hockey cards. Really wish ITG or others had a shot to compete.

I"ve heard this through my LCS too.. looks like they might be in trouble, then. I know Donruss is really trying to get back into official MLB, and thats what might kick UD out of baseball. I guess Donruss has a more appealling offer perhaps? I don't know the exact reasons, though. Just chuck it up to the rumor mill..
but..

Panini and basketball cards? Really? Hum. This should be interesting. I would have given it to donruss, not panini... I wonder who gets outsted, then? the NBA is very selective on how many people produce. I know Fleer made it 3 - but.. they had since made a comment that they only wanted 2 companies to produce NBA cards. Has that changed?

interesting news. so this could be the breakout by sport:

Baseball - Topps, Donruss (?)
Basketball - Panini
Football - Upper Deck, Donruss, Topps
Hockey - Upper Deck

i for one would like at least 2 companies per sport to have some variety.

At this point it is all rumors. There is a lot to the story from what I've been told and several people are getting nervous with MLB redemptions. To sum it up, UD wasn't playing by the rules set by the MLB and had several chances to make it right. Story sounds familar doesnt it?

Actually if you look at things Donruss is probably the best off. They dont owe anyone money. Both Topps and UD owe MLB and the NFL back money.

What I was just told from my lCS is that Panini offer the NBA 9 million for exclusive rights. Topps and UD combined only pay 5 mil for their licences. If I was the NBA this is pretty much a no brainer as well. But what I'm not sure on is what about the player union and/or licences for auto's etc? Is this included, or seperate?

9 million in todays economy is nuts.. I was just starting to get back into basketball this year since they didn't have exclusive deals with the rookies. Looks like that will be the end of that.

What I find interesting is how Panini will proceed with the "insert" card. When I was growing up I remember plain old stickers and glittery stickers. I know a lot of people have been upset with UD policies(ie redemptions) but this is real suprise. Personally: I have not bought much BBall this year and I just found out that I'm a victim of the "inventory depleted" redemption notice by UD, I hope Panini brings something new to the Trading card table. It's a shock but I'm willing to give them a shot.

I am not sure Donruss will get anything since they are now being sued by MLB.

Perhaps this will be the year to buy BBall products. Anyone remember when Donruss got kicked out of their MLB license, remember 2005 playoff absolute update. They loaded all their products that last year and it was some of the best MLB products ever. Maybe Upper Decks Exquisite will be like that this year.
