Rashard Lewis positive for roids

The Orlando Sentinel is reporting that Rashard Lewis tested positive for the steroid DHEA and will be suspended for 10 games next season.

The positive result was apparently caused by an over-the-counter nutritional supplement which Lewis did not know contained a banned substance. "First and foremost I take full responsibility for the situation and accept the corresponding penalty," Lewis said. "I hope every athlete can learn from my mistake that supplements, no matter how innocent they seem, should only be taken after consulting an expert in the field." Details should continue to emerge, but fortunately this looks like an isolated incidence of steroids in the NBA.

10 games?!?! Talk about a slap on the wrist. Luckily for the NBA, it doesn't seem that advantageous to take steroids for most basketball players... otherwise the NBA would have a rampant problem. MLB suspends for about 30% of a regular season for a first offense. The NFL suspends for nearly 25% of a regular season for a first offense. 10 games is only about 12% of an NBA season.

OTC, DHEA a forbidden substance in the NBA huh? Seems a bit hasty, you can buy that anywhere and it's recommended for older guys to help maintain testosterone levels.

they never said he tested positive for steroids . his testosterone level was above the norm. he claims he took a "over the counter supplement " which is the popular answer these days.

either way theres now excuse they know what they can and cant take.

And that is the reason it is on the banned substance list. Its not necessarily because DHEA itself is performance enhancing, much less illegal to use... its because it can mask other agents that are indeed performance enhancing and/or illegal to use. If it wasn't banned, then anyone could just use the same defense Rashard is using, whether or not they were actually taking anabolic steroids too. Its a banned substance, so the player is responsible for not putting it in their body. Whether it is an OTC drug or not is irrelevant.

dhea is a pro hormone not a masking agent
