Default Bored of the same players signing cards...

Panini and Upper Deck are both guilty of this.

It would be really refreshing to see card companies getting different players to sign.

I actually quite like the new Exquisite product, but I'm bored of seeing the same photos of the same players. Sure, they got some superstars to sign (Jordan, Russell, LeBron, Bird, Erving, Magic, etc) but I actually think the product would be more successful if it featured players such as:

- Allen Iverson (wasn't he bankrupt? Surely he'd jump at the chance to earn some money)

- Tim Duncan and Shaq (are they still tied into their Topps contracts?)

- Bob Cousy (he doesn't seem to sign much these days)

- Charles Barkley and Karl Malone (Ok, it's unlikely, but how great would it be if it happened? And if Leaf can get Malone to sign, why can't UD or Panini?)

- Patrick Ewing, etc.

Even if they were in their college jerseys, I'm sure autos of the above players would sell for huge prices and would generate some real intrigue in the product.

I think that's why my excitement about the new Exquisite release has been tempered slightly; I like most of the card designs, I don't mind college jerseys... but it's the same old checklist of players.

Patrick Ewing has already stated that he will never sign cards again. He recently did a signing event for Steiner and expressed how much he hates signing and that he doesnt need the money either.

it would just bring down the value of the old autos. its better for the hobby if those guys autos are rare. maybe they can get michael ray richardson or jason williams to sign if you want some new players.

Yeah, because Michael Ray Richardson and Jason Williams autos would really help increase sales and create interest in the hobby.

look at ken griffey jr or kobe prices. do you really think box breakers want guys who will have an overproduction of autos and cant get a big hit that will sell for more than the cost of a box? things are better without those guys signing.

You're right. Box breakers would hate it if Shaq, Duncan, Ewing, Malone, Barkley etc started signing.

What was I thinking.

That's exactly what is happening at the moment with Jordan, Erving, Bird, Magic, etc.

Hence, it would be nice to see some different players sign for a change.

Nobody said anything about them signing in every product for the next decade.

I agree with you Will 100%.

I read a tweet from some person at Upper Deck that said something along the lines of "people are mad we put so many stars in Exquisite. If we didnt, they would complain there werent enough and wouldnt get money back"

There are so many different paths UD could take, not sure if you saw my thread on ideas I am going to send them. I feel if they did a legends type product, think of how fresh that would be? The majority of people UD get to sign are legends (or legends in the making) anyway. I know they would have some fans if they copied the Timeless Memories design for NCAA moments-and also be able to bring in a bunch of new signers who wouldnt be expensive at all.

AI does sign. But he signs in very low print numbers. He actually has an auto in this years Gold Standard, it's #'d to /10 and I've only seen one pop up on eBay.

As a huge Duncan fan, I would love to see some new autos on some of the newer stuff out there. I'm with you on this Will.

Who are those people? I doubt they would create any interest in getting their autos. I have to agree with the OP. I would love to get a Barkley auto, or a Iverson auto.

Panini did a cool thing with the "Elusive" set in Past & Present, the only problem is the boxes were over priced. They should have been an addition, not a center piece. I love vague 90's players. Maybe I should start a Vernon Maxwell PC.......nah.

You might get your wish. Upper Deck is working on All Time Greats Basketball 2. Yes a set completely different from All Times Greats Sport Edition. I spoke to a lead rep who confirmed to me they have several BIG names that are signing for it that haven't signed in a pretty long time. He confirmed that Karl Malone was one of them. I'm pretty sure Ewing will be in it as well. I guess we'll just have to wait and see the full list.

I would just love to see my boy C-Webb sign, but apparently they can't get him because of some NCAA issue.

If this is how people remembered me in a NCAA uniform, I wouldn't want to sign cards where I'm pictured in that jersey either

Malone and Pipper were nice adds that Leaf got.

Phil Jackson would be a good one.
One of these days Barkley will get a deal with one of the companies. Maybe after a bad run in Vegas.

I collect cards. I sell from time to time to buy diff cards or fund other things but when I get a card, its cuz I like it and want it.

There are tons of collectors like me and not just investors like you. I am all for having more Duncan and AI signatures ( dont forget shawn kemp, Chris webber, & Reggie!)

It is NOT better for the hobby to have rare autos and for guys to never sign again. If Kobe autos were only worth $10 each instead of $100, then maybe some collectors who don't have as much disposable income would be able to acquire them

Agree with you Will.

I am tired of seeing David Thompson and Bill Walton as hits in every product. These guys have not turned down a signing opportunity for almost every product for a decade.

One of the reasons I went after the Chronology 2006-07 signature decades set was the diversity of signers. Yes the David Robinsons, Drexlers and Olajuwons were there, but so were the Arnie Risens, Slater Martins, and Bob Houbergs. Actually for a lot of these guys chronology was one of their only autograph release out there. Same goes ofr 2007-08.

I though Panini did well with their HOF release the first year and some of their cut cards (mostly the first year). UD and Topps both had final releases that year. In my opinion Panini quality and selection has gone down across the board with the exception of a couple releases. Of course with no competition there is little drive to differentiate yourself for a competitor.
