Default Why did this cost so much?

Just won this card earlier this afternoon. It's a nice card of a great player, but it's /99 so it's not incredibly rare. I'm not a huge basketball collector, but from what I've seen other lower-numbered autos of him have sold for less:

Bill Russell 09 10 Panini HOF Hall of Famed Famed Auto 48 99 | eBay

Beyond the obvious answer than I'm an overpaying idiot, I'm curious. Is this just a case of two guys fighting over a card for a set, or is this card "good" in some way? I was pretty much ready to pay whatever it took and I have no real concerns about the total, but in comparison to his others it seems high.

Again, I'm not a big basketball collector...just found it strange.

Was it originally a redemption? I think it might have been.

I remember a lot of people paying high prices for that card when it came out, presumably because it has a lower print run that most of the other cards in the set, some of which are numbered to /499 if I remember correctly.

Therefore, although /99 sounds high, there are probably more than 99 people trying to put the set together, which drives the prices up.

It's the same reason why the Larry Bird Bowman 48 auto sometimes sells for $300 (I've twice sold that card for $300, in fact).

That seller may have a big "fan base", I have seen a few of his vince carter auctions over the years go for more than the normal going rate. It may have to do with how much he sells ect. I saw two VC cards and his sold for roughly $25.00 more than the other auction (it has been a few years ago so I can not remember the exact amount) but he had however many thousand feedback vs. under 100 feedback for the other seller with the same card. Or he could be shilling
