Default Leaf talks about their exclusive signing of Damian Lillard and more

Brian Gray from Leaf did an interview with Trading Card Blog on their exclusive deal with Damian Lillard and the landscape of exclusive deals from within the hobby.

A few of the highlights:

Lillard can no longer sign Panini cards at the arena, among the reasons being that Panini could send people to the arena to get their cards signed in person and then insert them into their packs. Lillard can sign Panini cards during private or public signings with Leaf when a Leaf hologram can be added to them.

Competition to sign players to exclusives has skyrocketed and the prices to sign players to deals has skyrocketed as well.

Exclusive deals lead to a higher price points for products and take away choices from collectors.

Leaf would love to have an NBA license if the NBA were to feel competition is good for the market & collectors, however the economics of a license are not favorable at this time.

The complete interview can be read at http://www.facebook.com/TradingCardBlog

so now, a kid cant take a panini card to a game and get it signed by lillard because panini could have people do that and insert them into packs. but its ok for leaf to take sticker autos of durant and put them on topps cards and insert them into packs????

I was at a game and Blake Griffin would not sign my friends upper deck card he said it had to be panini .

There is no way panini puts lillard autos in there products with a leaf sticker .

So basically no nt auto lillard 4 sure

very sad and disappointing...I have zero interest in buying anything leaf. To bad lillard won't be in NT, unless it comes w a sticker. That's a joke in itself...

Exclusive contracts are just another way to screw the collector.

It is very dissapointing that Lilliard will only have autos in Leaf, but we have known this for a while. Just wish we could see a product with all the greats. Would be amazing

Just thinking of the possibilities..
Lillard/CP3/Stockton triple. That'd be a beauty

Exclusive contracts are killing the hobby. So is theft and fraud. Coincidentally UD is guilty of all 3 and leading the pact.

I actually had Damian sign his prestige rookie card at a game before his new contract with leaf. I think that card will skyrocket now.

Why is everyone upset about exclusive contracts? It's something UD did, so it has to be perfect and the greatest, right????

It's because these exclusive contracts are with a company who produces unlicensed products. Nobody complained when Kobe and Jordan were UD exclusives because at the time UD put out licensed NBA products, and they were not the only game in town when it came to licensed NBA products.

It sucks Lillard is an exlusive to a crappy company who puts out crappy products.

Lillard can still have cards in National Treasures, they just can't be autographed.

I did. UD signed exclusive contracts to get every other card company to leave the NBA. So now Panini has done the same thing UD tried to do, why is it any different?

The NBAPA should relieve all exclusive contracts with players. LIke Lebron and Kobe.

I support leaf and their exclusive contract with lillard, if other firms want to play the exclusive contract game then why should it matter if leaf has one too? The only reason we buy upperdeck products is because of MJ and Lebron, Durant/Kobe/melon/CP3/rose/etc for Panini.

And 12 years ago, Topps is bad for signing Tim Duncan and Shaquille O'Neal to exclusive contracts too! Get over it. I'm glad Brian stepped up and took some initiative.

His company is buying Prizm Lillard cards. Also has bid on some of the Leaf graded Lillards that ended recently.

I will co-sign to this.

The fact that it is with an unlicensed company just puts it over the top.

If that happens Panini will be so excited that they have signed Jordan that they will flood the market with Jordan autos, just like they did their first year with Kobe.

I think it's WAAAAY excessive that a kid would get turned down from Lillard if he all he had was a Panini Lillard card.

Anyone have that video of Blake?
