Default Panini America Offers an Extended Preview of 2012-13 Past & Present Basketball

Panini America Offers an Extended Preview of 2012-13 Past & Present Basketball
Jan 11th 2013, 17:24

The premiere edition of Panini America’s Past & Present Basketball product last season appealed to many different types of collectors for many different reasons, but the one common thread woven throughout the old-meets-new delight was pure, unadulterated fun.
From the tactile nature of 2011-12 Past & Present Basketball’s technology-driven inserts (such as Raining 3s and Breakout Stars) . . . to the wicked-cool throwback design of the base set . . . to the seldom-seen signers of Elusive Ink . . . to the sweet memorabilia offerings, there’s no denying the high entertainment value of one of last season’s most impressive debut products.

Of course, all of that just means that Panini America’s NBA Product Development team has its work cut out for it when creating the highly anticipated follow-up edition. But judging by the following preview of 2012-13 Past & Present Basketball, the guys are more than up to the task.
Due out in early May, 2012-13 Past & Present Basketball will feature a 250-card base set that includes 50 short-printed variations and, for the first time ever, true Rookie Cards. Each box will deliver three autographs.
Other product highlights include:The classically styled base cards will be countered with six unique technology-driven inserts, including the return of Raining 3s, Treads (showcasing the look and feel of sneaker treads), Winning Touch Banners and the felt-textured Headbands. The cereal-box-inspired Rise ‘n Shine insert is sure to be a big hit, too.
We’ll have tons more to share on 2012-13 Past & Present Basketball in the coming weeks and months. Until then, though, enjoy this first extended sneak peek . . .

I really wish they'd stop using odd shapes for the patch windows. The brand logo that cuts into the window is an eye sore. They seem to go that route a lot now. I don't understand how they can do it right in some products like Black Football (foil + smooth shapes) and so wrong in others like Contenders Basketball and this (no foil + jagged/weird windows).

They should have numbered the variation and paralells. Would make it more collectable.

I love black background cards with colourful patches. The only downside to black border is the chipping.

Yuck. Autos from all the scrubs from the past and present. Here come more Bryant Reeves and Laurence Funderburke sticker autos.

Exactly my thoughts... It would be terrifying to see a jeremy lamb of this insert. Thank god he doesn't wear headbands.

What's the difference from the other 4 previous products that have the same type of patches and design?

Actually I am one of the few who likes the Elusive Ink subset. I think it's a nice chance to get a certified auto from someone who doesn't have one (or alot of them) on the market.

I guess not much of anything other than it being a black color.

Standard patch window on different cards. Just like Exquisite EE windows in 03 and 09. Same with Exquisite base autos jerseys in 03-04-05. But just like all those years of exquisite, Panini product change the background, colour and name of sets. Seems like the "run of the mill" process to me!

03 EE vs 09 EE
04 Exquiste jersey vs 05 Exqusite jersey
04 RPA vs 05 RPA.

All use the standard patch window in the same place. Background changes. Thats about it.

03 UD EE

09 UD EE

dare i say it... i am actually anticipating this release This might actually be the first product i will buy a box of this year(12-13 product)

Last years release of past and present really showed off that panini can actually do cards with varying textures for inserts. When they released the product, it seemed like they were heading in the right direction. This year... blah... not really like what they are doing so far. It's like one step forward and two steps back.

Past & Present - one of the few things Panini get right. I like the retro feel, it has an unusual checklist (well, it did last year, so I'm guessing the same thing this year), and the cards are unique.

I actually like this set. I thought last years was good and this design is okay by me.

I hate this product!! Panini is starting to make an ugly turn with basketball! TC, Preferred and NT will end up being the only good products this year.
