I would stay away from cards as an investment with 30k

30k worth of gold for this guy

yeah, it's tough.

I mean if you're willing to lose everything but gain a lot, your best opportunity is probably something like buying every Gold Prizm rookie /10 outside of Irving, Lillard and the other already expensive guys.

You can't make a ton of money off star players, you have to find sort of the under the radar guys.

I'm not in cards to make money I collect, but I also like to collect things that will hold value.

I recently bought an Iman Shumpert Green Prizm refractor for like $15. I thought that was a pretty cheap price considering if he stays healthy he is a pretty exciting player, and plays in a huge market, so I feel that card has plenty of room for growth.

The highest graded vintage superstar RC I could get - Mikan, Russell or Wilt.

I love my PSA 8 Wilt RC. The card is over 50 years old and in good condition.

A Jordan logoman auto is probably worth more than 30k but that lebron is nice and a good investment.

If not, I wouldnt consider it a good investment.

The Lebron exquisite in my opinion hit a temp ceiling. Either its close to the cap of the cards demand at its price point or its hit the threhold of what speculators are willing to risk. Buying it for 12k and selling it for 30k in 10 yrs is less than 8% returns with no inflation. Factor in inflation and its less. Then you ask yourself if 8% returns or less is good for a decade ROI?? Thats from an investment/speculation standpoint. Collector standpoint wouldnt matter because you dont care whether it goes up or down because the main goal should be owning one at a comfortable budget.

From a speculator standpoint, my opinion should be on the mantra of quick positive returns. Less risk, smaller gains but profits grow much quicker because you sink profits back into revinestment to make more profits.
I wouldn't touch any card for long term investment. Very poor choice.

I wouldn't touch gold either. Gold has hardly any untapped intrinsic value. Long term gold is an annual return of less than 1%.

I was hoping that eco student with the graphs would come in here telling how cards are a great investment because when the economy goes down the drain, he can go to ebay to sell it lol.

I actually don't buy cards for investments but for my personal collection.
For personal collection, if it's enough to buy it, then for this:

If not, I will most likely keep the money.

for investment purposes, either a high grade HOF RC or if Panini does right, then the best Kyrie Irving National Treasures patch/auto (be it a logoman or nicest patch i can get). i just believe in him as a player enough that i think if the Cavs become championship contenders the rise in value will get to Durant/Rose levels, and possibly more if there are future titles and continued great play.

Wouldn't invest that much in cards. Probably buy shares in Berkshire Hathaway.

I think the thread is pretty limited, based on the criteria. You might as well just try to list the most expensive basketball cards out there and ask how well you think they will give a return. The list of ~30k cards (or even ballpark) is probably what.... less than 10?

If you redid the thread with a much smaller number, say $2000 or even $5000, you could get a much wider range of discussion. Just my two cents. But I don't want to sound like I want to derail this thread, so I'll play along.

The safest bet is someone that's already proven to hold long-term collectability. While Lebron is on the cusp of all-time greatness, I think if he had a career-ending injury tomorrow, prices on his cards would dip. To me, that leaves Wilt and Jordan as the prime candidates (other top 5-10 all time players just don't sell as high). From that, you have to narrow down cards to fit close to that price range, which I think would be:
(Please note, I'm a bit out of my element here because I don't collect either player)
BGS 9.5+ RC's (I do not know if there is even a Wilt in existence, I have not looked at such things)
97-98 Jordan Metal PMG Green
97-98 Jordan UD Game Jersey Auto /23
Wilt Inkredible /13
Jordan Exquisite Logoman (Unsure of prices here)

From these, I think the safest bet would be to find a highly graded Wilt RC, or the Wilt autograph. If you SOMEHOW found one that was mint condition, you would have a true rarity. There's always going to be new 1/1 cards or whatever in sets nowadays, so rarity in modern products isn't quite the same. You know there aren't magically going to be 100 new ones to appear tomorrow, and the Wilt RC doesn't have the huge faker scene going on that the Jordan Fleer RC does.

The reason I went with the base RC over some of the inserts of Jordan is because of the large price fluctuation that the inserts have had. The original Gu/Auto cards have been super collectible since day 1, but the PMGs could lose some interest, especially with UD doing 'new versions', which kind of water down the market. Same for Jordan autos. Exquisite cards are very valuable, but everybody and their mom sends in Exquisite cards for grading, and even a graded logoman of Jordan isn't going to be that rare. In addition, if UD gets the license back and Jordan is still coming out of that product, there could potentially be many more logomen to be produced in the future, which could flood the market (see: Kobe auto values from Gold Standard).

Just my thoughts. It was fun to think about it in an investment way. But honestly, I think you could make a much better return on cards that have a lower initial price and more potential or ceiling.

I see this is an older thread, and I already posted in it.... But here goes how I'm feeling today.

If I had 30k to blow on a single card, I'd want an Elgin Baylor 1961 Fleer RC in PSA 10, IF............... If one would sell for 30k and not more. If not, a 1968 Topps Test set Elgin Baylor card in the highest grade possible that 30k would pay for.

Other than that, not feeling any other cards at the moment.
