Default If you had 30k to invest in 1 single card for investment purposes what would it be?

Just curious to see what other people think would be a good investment? Im not buying or anything just curious.. My pick would be a Lebron james Exquisite 03-04 RPA

When I saw your thread title, the first card that came to mind was LeBron's 2003-04 Exquisite RPA.

This isn't my video, but check it out: MAILDAY:2003-2004 LEBRON JAMES EXQUISITE AUTO RC ROOKIE PATCH #49/99 - YouTube

Reasons why it is a great investment:

- LeBron will go down as one of the top 5 players of all-time.
- 2003-04 was the first year of Exquisite cards.
- It is short printed to just 99 whereas there are thousands of Jordan RCs (although admittedly not many that are BGS 10 or 9.5).
- It looks stunning.

Just my opinion though.

I think you're right on with that! I think that card will go down as the best basketball sports card ever.. IMO I think it will be a 50k card some day..

Maybe a stupid question, but is the /99 worth more than the /25? Also, would you rather have #6 or #23?

I've heard that some people don't consider /23 a true RC.

My top 3, excluding any 1/1s and 90's Masterpieces:

1. 97-98 Michael Jordan All-Star Jersey Auto #/23
2. 97-98 Michael Jordan Precious Metal Gems Green #/10
3. 97-98 Kobe Bryant Precious Metal Gems Green #/10

As for the Lebron, I'm not too sure if the fact that he is in his Cavs uniform and not Heat will hurt the cards value. Who knows though...

Kevin Durant Exquisite Auto. I think he will end up being better than LeBron.

While I disagree with this, I do believe that Durant is going to go down as better than Kobe

I would love to have that 97-98 Jordan All-Star jersey auto. That is one sweet card!

The real question you have to ask yourself is has the lebron RPA peaked and hit its ceiling? If not, how much more do you think it can increase. Calculate that with the time invested into the card less opportunity risk plus inflation. If that number is comfortable on a ROI vs risk taken, then take the chance. If not, I wouldnt consider it a good investment.

The Lebron exquisite in my opinion hit a temp ceiling. Either its close to the cap of the cards demand at its price point or its hit the threhold of what speculators are willing to risk. Buying it for 12k and selling it for 30k in 10 yrs is less than 8% returns with no inflation. Factor in inflation and its less. Then you ask yourself if 8% returns or less is good for a decade ROI?? Thats from an investment/speculation standpoint. Collector standpoint wouldnt matter because you dont care whether it goes up or down because the main goal should be owning one at a comfortable budget.

From a speculator standpoint, my opinion should be on the mantra of quick positive returns. Less risk, smaller gains but profits grow much quicker because you sink profits back into revinestment to make more profits.

Excellent post OJ! To add to it, I'll use a paraphrased Wayne Gretzky saying, "Don't skate to where the puck is, but to where it's going Jari!!~~"

Aside from that, now if nba players were stocks...

Lebron would be aapl, Kobe would be msft, MJ would be goog, and everyone else besides future HOF'ers and stars would be a money trapping penny stock!

You know, the more I think about it, the more I start to realize that Lebron, unlike Jordan, had many rookie cards. Jordan only has the 1986-87 Fleer, and some might consider his 1985 Star card, but very few. So when you compare a Jordan Fleer RC in Gem Mint, and then Lebron who have MANY rookie cards, I don't think his Exquisite would do as well as some might think. Now if that was his ONLY rookie in the world, even without the Gold/23 version of that card, then you would be talking big bucks in the future. But when you really think about it, he has how many rookie cards? Then from those rookie cards, how many parallels?

If I had $30,000.00 to "invest"? Well, I don't really buy cards to invest, so if I had 30k to spend on the pc... i'd probably buy a complete set of 1950 Scott's Potato Chips cards, which includes a George Mikan! And would probably have some money left to buy a complete set of 1948 Bowman... maybe. Not sure what those Scott's are going for these days. Or better yet, i'd just buy all the key George Mikan cards and forget the set. His 1950 Menko, 1950 Royal Desserts, Bread for Energy and Bread for Health, and others that I might be forgetting right now.

You didn't miss anything.... FAKE bids to try and create some fake hype. I can take a $10 card and make fake bids to make it show that it sold for $500+...... but what does that mean? Nothing.

Agree. There are too many different cards of every player these days. Half are considered rare because they are numbered which makes rare cards less special. Id invest in a nice Jordan just because it will always be the greatest card in basketball.

I can't really think of a single card that expensive that I think a profit can be made off of.

I love Jordan, absolutely the best basketball player ever, but how much more can his cards improve?

Jordan would be a very low risk/low reward investment in my opinion. They won't go down much if at all, but they also are so high they won't get much more expensive.

atleast not a healthy profit considering the risk. Its not worth laying out 30k to make a few thousand
