Default Leaving the hobby + alternative to Paypal?

Hey guys, I had a huge issue with paypal today regarding a new account that I made. My brother and I usually share an account and I finally decided it was time to make my own account. The thing is that when I opened it and sold a few cards, my payments got frozen and my account went to "limited" mode. I couldn't spend, send or even refund the members back their money. I then called paypal to see what was up and the woman on the phone interrogated me like I was some sort of criminal. "What were those payments for and where did they come from?" "If it was a basketball card why did the member send a personal payment?" "We are going to need photo ID, proof of address and your bank account information before we release the funds"

I had to call them back after getting interviewed by the woman and I told the gentleman to please refund the payments that I received and asked if he can just close the account. He refunded the payments but he couldn't close the account.... thanks Paypal. It was tough to explain this whole situation to the guys that bought my cards and I am truly sorry.

This whole ordeal has really turned me away from online buying and selling and I may be leaving the hobby real soon. I also feel like this hobby no longer has as many collectors but more investors. I was wondering if anyone has any way of cashing out their cards without using paypal? I was thinking I could go to the nationals and sell some there, what do you guys think?

Best wishes,
Greg

It's a real shame to see someone leave the hobby, but I do see where you're coming from. As for selling aside from Paypal I'd consider using concealed cash for online, but it does turn away countless potential buyers. Shows are also good for cash depending on location.

was it a gift payment? i'd imagine it is because this is a new account and is immediately getting gifts from strangers that paypal would think its money laundering.

Paypal is making major changes this year.

I read a piece by their executives that mentioned some huge changes upcoming.

No, and there won't be until a real alternative to eBay comes around. eBay owns PayPal, so of course they won't accept any other payment options. Hopefully amazon is the one to destroy eBay, they've always been great.

Crazy fee from paypal? I am sure I can't another way to protect seller better than paypal with just 2.9% fee. 15 years ago, I would have to take my risk of having paying the bank $20 for a check that has no balance.

On top of it, Western Union charges WAY more than paypal that requires government issued ID. I'm sure no buyer would want to give that info to the seller.

Yes there is at least for me as a buyer.
I have bought over 100 pc cards via Western Union money WIRE,
Direct deposite into wells fargo and chase banks, as well as money orders.
I have NEVER had anyone screw me over ( I do my dd as well before I make a trade).

So yes there are other things you can do but its not as easy as paypal.
Paypal is an EASY if not the EASIEST way to pay since its click and done.
I have a CC terminal for 2 corps and one small terminal (like the ones you have seen on tv) and I take CC over the phone for cards with verified members of course.

Now as for the seller I read through and realized they wont allow you to display what payments you will take you can only put in paypal.
I sold 11k in cards via bank wire on ebay and even put on my listings I did not take paypal.. no issue but things may have changed.

A member here ( dont want to disclose his name) bought my Tyreke Evans rpa via cc over the phone.
I have a real business so no issue.
I send money orders to Vu/Yi for spots in breaks.. same goes for 8 other bo members on here.
Ask anyone who I have bought something from.
I am also very understanding of the issue about fake Money orders.
So I simply ask for a cell phone number and when i am at the store I take a pick of the money orders and the proof of purchase and txt it to the person.
I also dont expect anything to ship until payments have cleared.

Its more work but there are ways around it imo.

Hey Greg, sorry to hear about your ordeal with PayPal.

I know that a lot of European collectors have turned their back on PayPal and, instead, only send and receive payments via bank transfer.

It would be a real shame if you left the hobby. You're a good guy and I've enjoyed talking trade with you.

There's another alternative to send money: https://www.dwolla.com/
Their fees are minimal, but not a lot of people use it and I'm not sure if they have any protection like in paypal. I wished more people would use it so I can actually try out the service haha. . .

Why are US banks so far behind the curve for money management? Direct Deposit has been around for atleast 2 decades in Canada while I still hear about people still getting cheques to deposit at the bank for pay.

CDN banks have email money transfer system. You can simply send upto $2000 to anyone with an email account and a bank account as much as $2000 and it costs exactly $1. US banks need to start accepting interac email money transfers.

When I do business with a Canadian, I tend to use EMT instead.

Beacuse US bank regulators are getting tough on money laundering laws. Did you see all the fines that were handed out to big banks last year and this year? Bank are scared to push out new products.

That's probably because as a new user and you are getting a lot of gift payments from different people will raise red flags in their compliance monitoring system. All US banks, Credit Unions, Western Union, Moneygram, Paypal, Greendot, etc have systems to detect money laundering. They are required by law to do so. Let's just say you are hit in the system, they are required to investigate whether you are suspicious or not and file necessary report(s) with the US govt.

EMT actually helps the banks. It leaves a trail of all fund transfers. Much easier to work with instead of filling out release forms when depositing.

For example, I went to the casino this weekend and took out 10k cash from the bank. Lets say I won $20k. When I go to deposited anything over $9,999 I have to fill out a govt form declaring where the money came from. Since its gambling its non taxable. If I cannot provide sufficient proof, I could be liable to declare it as income and pay taxes on it. EMT lets you transfer leaving a paper trail showing net $$ being transferred for personal reasons. This easily can be evidence needed to provide that the money is non taxable since it was for personal use. Even better is when it becomes a regular payment, the govt automatcially knows where and to it goes!!

I dont even visit the bank anymore. Everything is done online or telephone banking.

I only got one gift payment and I am in Canada. I can hear in their tone of voice that they thought I was "guilty" of something? It was like being accused of something that you are not guilty of, completely turned me off from their service. I hope everyone realizes that eventually all of the payments received from "goods" will be taxed and paypal will eventually need all of your personal information and bank accounts/personal information (Social insurance number/photo ID/etc) hooked up in the near future. It's just a matter of time, trust me. The world we are living in today is getting less and less private and people are following the masses. There is less and less freedom in today's world...

Not eventually, you have to pay tax since day 1. It is just that people are not doing it.

What I am saying is that you will no longer have any privacy, please understand what I am trying to tell you. This is not about taxes, its about your privacy being taken away from you. When they require your photo ID, your social insurance card and anything personal information that they request from you, you can go ahead and give it to them. Good luck with that my man

Photo ID, name address are all public information. The option of giving a SS number is available. By law you do not have to give anyone your SS number at all. Not even CC companies. Its specfically stated on there as (optional).

Its a matter of choice. You make the choice of giving that information or not. I never had to give such information for my paypal account. I have linked to a CDN bank account and no other information was ever asked for. I wonder why its different for you. Do you have your paypal account linked to your bank account?
